This is an image of an RE Sapper, beginning to detect the mines and other Chindit related booby traps from around the perimeter of White City in November 1944. The clear up, so to speak.

I found this on twitter. not a great photo but it kind of shows the steepness and close proximity of OP and Pagoda Hill.

Found this rare photograph on ebay. Have never seen a decent photograph taken from inside White City. Not exactly sure where this was taken from. Pagoda Hill looking north-east?

What a superb photograph; did the ebay seller mention anything about the source in the listing? Is it an official photograph?

Will check again but pretty sure no other info, will post link to item shortly. It's a cracker isn't it. Any idea which part of the stronghold it was taken from, not certain it was taken from Pagoda Hill and think Pagoda Hill could be hill in the middle distance with the trees?

It seems to be an official U.S. Army photograph.

Another of these photographs has appeared on eBay. Be interesting to find out where the seller is getting these.

Great photo that. If the blurb on the back is right, then it must have been taken late October 1944. 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers (36 Div) passed through White City and took Mawlu on the afternoon of 31st October. Their attack was supported by Vickers MGs ('B' Platoon 'D' Coy 2nd Manchesters) and 3.7-inch howitzers ('F' Troop of 494 Bty, 130 Assault Fd Regt plus two guns from 366 Bty, 178 Assault Fd Regt). Japanese opposition came from elements of 34 IMB and 128 Regt (53 Div), supported by 75mm guns.

Have attached a google earth image of the White City area. I have numbered various features and wonder if anyone can help with the correct name of these features. Pagoda Hill is named on the bottom of the image. I'm looking for the correct position other features such as OP Hill and any other features that were named. (The numbers may notnecessarily refer to a named feature ).

Edit The questions below refer to the Pagoda Hill action on 17/3/1944

    (1) Which position and direction did Calvert and the HQ Coy come from and which ridge was he led along by radio.

    (2) Where roughly were the group of South Staffs including Lt Cairns positioned when Calvert went to them.

    (3) Which feature and direction did Shaw and his Gurkhas attack from.

Hi all. Long time since I’ve been here. Re the photo. I think this is taken from the hill opposite Pagoda Hill. We visited a few years ago and although Pagoda hill looks different now, the flat area behind was where the airstrip was, I believe. There were still trenches on this spot and the Burmese army were installed on both sites.
