The BBC cameras seemed fascinated by the veteran in a white beret yesterday. What does the white beret signify please? Also, there was a veteran in a black peaked cap, looked a bit like a tugboat captain or similar, if you see what I mean. Again, I wonder what that signified. Just wondering. Martin
As for the Black peak cap without ID'ing a badge it could be anything or nothing. I saw a vet being interviewed wearing a baseball cap yesterday...A double take showed it to have a Royal Corps of Signals badge on it.
No, this was no baseball cap. It was better 'formed' than that. It had a small peak, and the body of the cap probably had stiffeners in it, to make it slightly higher than the peak. If you can imagine an amateur sailor with non-naval headgear, sort of merchant marine/barge type, then this would fit the bill.
I know I was refering to the baseball cap as a example to 'without a badge it could be anything'. He may have even bought it from the bucket and spade shop in Arromanches to keep the sun off his head before it rained.
AS I made the comment on the other thread - the White Beret here in Canada signifys the Merchant Navy - for all their service - not just in the Arctic... Cheers
I think the veteran in question was one in my group, who was a Merchant Navy veteran who was offshore on D Day, aged only 16.
