In 1943, the Kriegsmarine commissioned the construction of twelve 327t multipupose(less) escort vessels, which were somewhere between MGB and Corvette in type (but with a ridiculously undersized engine). Only one of these was completed, which went to GB in 1945. Does anyone have any documentation on the whereabouts of this boat, any possibly existing evaluation or know where to look for them? regards Olli
No help whatsoever MZ1 was never fully commissioned by German navy, her trials were incomplete when war ended. In 1945 MZ1 was captured by British troops, her further fate is unknown. MZ1 multi-purpose ships (1944) Again mentioned here but whereabouts unknown Mehrzweckboot (MZ) 1943
Perhaps my first post was a bit TOO superficial: I am fully aware of the history of the boat and all technical data - up to May 1945.... After that its trace is lost. So my silent hope that here in the forum is someone who knows the matter and can possibly give clues. (After all, far more offside inquiries have been successfully answered here). To explain why I am interested in this case: For some unknown reason (incompetence, drug-induced delusions...), some clown in the Naval Construction Office decided to equip the vessel with the K-H-D "wonder engine" T12M 133 with 1200 PSe. Thus the displacement and armament stood in a grotesque disproportion to the propulsion system and the speed achievable with it. Which makes e.g. the torpedo armament pure ballast... Only: the German documents of the trials are lost and maybe this way something about the actual performance can be found out. Simply nerd curiosity regards Olli
Ltdan Any idea where it was when it was captured? There is almost bound to be a mention in a War Diary.
The boat was on 10 May under command of the 20.Vorpostenflotille in the Kiel Canal, it is said to have docked thereafter on 31.8.45 at Bontekai in Wilhelmshaven, at least that is the last trace I have. However, all sources agree that it was subsequently transferred to GB. Therefore my hope that here is someone who could possibly help further regards Olli
Olli I believe War Diaries were still being used in August 1945 so one way forwards might be to idientify the British/Canadian units in the area at that time. Admittedly very 'looking for a needle in a haystack'...
NV151 - Kriegsmarine Coastal Forces Gordon Williamson, illustrated by Ian Palmer Records of MZl's use and eventual fate are virtually nonexistent .It is believed that she was captured by British forces when Eckernfordefell ,but there seems to be no record of what befell her.
