I take it that you are aware of the symbolism of the blue cornflower enamel badge? especially in what was German occupied Europe. yes... though (like a swastika), it means different things to different people and if any of them see it as the pan-Germanic right-wing, then that's their problem. I wear it in memory of the fallen German and French soldiers, both of whom can be (and have been) represented by the cornflower. It's my "Franco-German Poppy" (and I got it from the VdK quite a few years ago anyway ... they probably only produced it to piss off the Austrians though!) Dave.
Dave, I only knew it to be a recogition between members of Masonic Lodges, that were outlawed by the NS party. I had no idea it was used by other faction. Regards Tom
I'll let you into a secret. My poppy gets an airing just once a year and it's actually been the same one for the past twenty odd years !!! This is simply because I always like to ensure that I have one ready for the AJEX parade. Before you start saying "you stingy bxxxxxd !" I hasten to add that I always make sure that I make a donation to the first poppy seller I see in November. We shall remember them. Ron
you stingy b.....d...no belay that read the whole post.. I think a few folk keep previous poppies..i know one lady who does. but then she buys me one with a tenner every year..good girl she is.

Ron From your thumbnail it's starting to look a bit crumpled, Ron, how about investing in a new one ready for next year's parade
I managed to buy mine about 5 weeks ago from a rather sprightly RAMC Veteren in Belgium. He did a roaring trade with the locals once they knew what it signified. Just started looking for it and realised I've lost it.
Branch Chairman likes us to wear the campaign medals I always worry that some oik is gonna do the Poppy seller over & nick his tin & medals. Some tossers are really brave at attacking old men.
I always buy mine from a seller at the Cenotaph before the remembrance ceremony begins, then I'll wear it for a few days after. Ron, That's quite amazing you've had the same one all that time. When I read it I said, "NO WAY" out loud. Our lass asked what I was referring to and when she read it she said the same thing.
Marcus "No way !" indeed.......... You show "our lass" this scan of my medal bag that I took a minute ago, just to show you how the medals are kept from one year to another. You will note that the bag contains my cap badge, sweetheart badge (for Nita) and the aforementioned poppy. You will be no doubt relieved to learn that all the medals are polished before I go on parade. However, because of the furore caused by my admitting that I keep my poppy from year to year I will make a point of getting a new one and wearing it on parade........ photographic evidence will duly follow !
Someone care to post me a wrist band? Pity these haven't crossed the ocean yet. thanks. phil Phil, Never mind the Atlantic Oceon, they do not appear to have crossed the Channel yet. We just received a supply of Wreath's, poppies and crosses etc, but no wrist bands. Regards Tom
Blimey , have we justed bullied a Veteran into buying a poppy. great headline for tomorrows sun..ww2 fans force jewish vetran to cash pension..kerry katona entertains troops page 11 gordon brown buys a poppy for territorials..helmand troops find alternative poppy use...majorca for a penny..
I know this seems a daft question but will someone PLEASE tell me which side the poppy is to be worn? Most of the MEN I have seen wearing poppies put it on their left side and some females do too, but I have seen some female presenters on the BBC news wearing their poppy on the right hand side. Maybe the BBC aren't getting it correct all the time? Lesley
There is no correct side, unless you go under some bizarre military-civvy dress code? It's a Poppy, not a medal. Left, right, stick it in your hat, doesn't matter one bit. Mine's usually at my throat, because I stick it in the zip of my jacket...
Thanks Adam-query sorted! Lesley PS Ah but I see the poppy on your avatar is on the left. Maybe right-handed people find it easier to pin it on their left-hand side whereas I am a leftie so I will pin it on my right!
