In November 1944, the 5th Indian Division was withdrawn from the front line in Burma and moved to the Naga Hills to rest and recover. After Christmas, it moved to Jorhat to convert from an animal transport division to a mixed motorized/air landing division. It returned to the front n March 1945.

At some point during this period, the 3/9th Jat Regiment left the 9th Indian Infantry Brigade and became the divisional reconnaissance battalion.

Does anyone know the date of this change?

Does anyone have a copy of the rare regimental history?

Hailes, Walter L. and Ross, J. The Jat Regiment: A History of the Regiment 1803-1947. Volumes I & II (N.B. one book). Bareilly, India: Jat Regimental Centre, 1967.

I think that agrees with my assumption of January 1945 to start the conversion since it was at Jorhat that the 5th Division made the change from animal transport to motorized transport. They were in action by March so it fits in.

    Thanks
