I just watched 'Fort Algiers' on telly. I've never seen it before but have always enjoyed such films, 'Beau Geste' and so on. I was watching a fight scene with the baddy lead taking a beating. "That's Ironside" I laughed out loud. And it was Raymond Burr!

Good old fashioned black and white story:

Well worth another look and so pleased they didnt use that whole "wobbly hand held camers" style that was so "in" in the 1990's and is now de rigeur in all the history / Open University programmes (you can tell its a bad style when the O.U. adopt it ;) )

487 aircraft flown was it? Not including sub-types either apparently.

It was indeed a nice 'plain' documentary where the story spoke better than any dramatization or technical dicking about could.
Wonder if they're drifting back to being just plain informative. Hope so.

Having not been in touch for some time I wonder if I dare mention the Great British Menu Banquet for D-Day veterans and the like which will be shown on BBC2 7 pm.on Friday 6 June. It was actually recorded in March in the crypt at St Paul's. (And no I didn't see any cat).

Well my favourite WW2 film was on again today, Tora, Tora, Tora.

The nice thing about today was that my eldest daughter watched it with me and seemed to find it of interest. She turned to me about halfway through and said:

"Hey Dad, if it wasn't for Pearl Harbor, do you think that your granddad would have survived WW2?"

    Food for thought indeed.

Anyone been watching Antiques Roadshow Detectives? There have been some really good stories this past week, but I should imagine that this interview with Zdenka Fantlova, a Holocaust survivor meeting George Leonard, one of the British soldiers whose unit liberated Bergen-Belsen will be a very emotional one.

You can see it on Wednesday 15th April at 18.30pm on BBC 2
