I would go along with you with No.1, but not with No.2 as when looking on the sling is not placed on the saqme as the enfield with No.1. so I would go for a sten, then a Tommy gun for sure, and a brengun with no4 carried by the handle

    SD,
I would tend to agree with Andy. First and second look like 303 Enfields.
Three is definitely a Thompson SMG and four does appear to be a Bren due to the way the soldier is carrying it by handle. Appears to have a first aid dressing attached to the Butt.

    Regards
    Tom

I think No.2 looks different because he is carrying it at an angle (Magazine at 90 degree angle to the right if that makes sense) hence why the sling and sling swivel location appear to be different.

    I still think it's a .303

    Regards
    Andy

That was what I was thinking, but could not tell what it was.

    I'll give no argument about 1, 3 & 4.

    Damn their shutter speed.

Could number 2 be a Thompson as well?
Despite the blur it doesn't say 'Sten' to me. Maybe that distinctive tapered barrel rather than the 'small tube banged into a bigger tube' of the Sten?

nah it must be a rifle, you wouldnt carry a SMG by the barrel, with no mag in. ITs must be a 303 as Andy says.

Unless he his holding the weapon in such a way that the magazine is completely hidden by the barrel and breach, but then all the weight would be to the rear, making it to me, unwieldy to carry.

I'm leaning towards 'Rifle' now, but still not sure - added a poll ;).

Just looked at the larger image (Link) and I'm even more convinced it's a .303. The rock doestn't help as well as the angle but I can just make out what appears to be the fore sight and barrel.

    Cheers

In the poll, how about a 5th choice? ---> Tubular metalic object that makes a lot of noise while it rapidly propels pointed lead projectiles out one end. That is about as close as I am going to be able to get.

    I agree with 1,3 and 4.

Could 2 be a Lee Enfield Carbine or an M1 Carbine? It looks to be shorter than the SMLE No 4 and the sling swivel appears to be a shorter distance from the muzzle.

Not the normal weapon you would expect to be carried by a British infantryman.

    :unsure: Pardon me, jumping blissfully in with my boots full of ignorance, but;

In how many beach landings did 'ordinary' soldiers arrive with cammo'd faces and leaves in their helmets? Are they Commando's?

Then there's the point at which he's gripping the weapon. I've handled a Lee Enfield .303. Damn things weigh a ton! No One could grip a .303, as far forward as that chap appears to be doing. The counter balanced weight would be astronomical.

For my money then; I'd guess they're Commando's, and that is a Thomson. If the magazine - hidden behind his right thigh - is angled slightly to our left, that explains the apparent lack of wood / thickness to the fore end. Simple optical illusion of the shot.

    All adds up, to me.

You could be right. Murdoch McDougall's Swiftly They Struck (Odhams 1954) shows snipers of No 4 Commando with these weapons.

    Enfield, Thompson, Thompson, Sten.

Chap in question looks like he's holding the thompson by the gap between the magazine and the forward grip and has it twisted so we can only see the top of the barrel and not the mag, nor much of the grip. The last chaps not carrying a bren, both the sling and the mag are too far forward. It's all in the slings.
