Hi, This Pillbox sits on the hill above Magilligan Camp in County Londonderry. It is in great condition with original metal door. There are no internal walls and it had a very large frontal port. Can anyone tell me what type it is or what it would have been used for??
It looks like the type that would have been a machine gun emplacement, possibly sited above a tank trap. There are a few similar that I've seen near locations designated as tank traps on old WW2 maps of the Auckland defence network.
Have a look at this site to see if you can spot the type. UK Pillbox, Pillboxes, Bunkers, Anti-tank traps and other Anti-Invasion Defences built in World War 2 If you can't identify it you could try sending the pics to this site for identification. Pete P.S. The 'bulge' below the front slit suggests it housed a water-cooled Vickers MG. The bulge was for the MG condensing unit so possibly 'Vickers MG' or a modified Type 24 box?
It would seem to be a modified version of a standard British pillbox known simply as a Vickers Machine Gun Emplacement. See VICKERS MEDIUM MACHINE GUN (MMG) EMPLACEMENT, PILLBOX, WWII DEFENCES, PILLBOX STUDY GROUP John
