From sometime in 1942 to April 1944 the RAF roundel was used as a recognition symbol by some Canadian and British army vehicles but usually on softskins and painted on the bonnet

On the side and not on the top of the bonnet as an recognition symbol to avert friendly fire from above?

James, just for reference, here is a Matilda with a circular squadron symbol on it. So you can see that this is just a simple hollow circle, quite different from your armoured car photo.

Hi all, over the Christmas period was able to view some bits and pieces that until a few weeks ago no one knew existed. Packed up in a box and left with an aunt. Did not know what was in the box and until recently only 1 photo of my Grandfather during the war, his medals, and a couple of badges. I got his service records which gave lots of useful info but the few items in this box have given me so much more. - not sure if anyone is interested but thought I would upload them anyway. have had to compress to do so so the quality may be a little compromised.
there is still one very very small pocket diary he bought in Durban for the year 1942/43 that have yet to look at but its full of almost unreadable faint pencil entries.
