It is a Sherman , I'm not sure that actual mark or type , too confusing for me.
But is not a Firefly, they had the longer barrelled 17 pdr , the tank in the photo has a 75mm gun.

    Not a Firefly.

Looks like an M4a1 Sherman on first glance.

I think you are right. Looks like a cast hull and turret with the later commander's hatch

this is a really good compare picture I think: M4A1 Sherman | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
There are similarities but more differences. The front of the tank my grandfather is sitting on seems much longer... less curved...

well, I think the rivets? may throw you of. The tanks had special camouflage cloth. I think you can see the nails/rivets on the flanks just above the tire. The opened hatch is a possible hint of something? And according to the stories he was stationed on the regimental headquarter tank as hullgunner. maybe that helps for info?
Well maybe the M4A1 isn't a bad guess. This picture show a very different hull: M4 Sherman - Imperial War Museum, London | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
The line is definetely curved in the picture I'm researching. COuld there be a 'tank inventory' for the 3rd and 4th London Yeomanry Sharpshooters?

Looks cast to me, and I don't think there's a welded one which is that shallow a slope where the glacis and side sponsons meet.
    Grizzly? M4 Composite?
That bit on the bottom right throws me a little, but might be an artefact of photography or Sandshield/Trackguard mounting.

I'll get some books out if nobody potters along with non-rusty shermanising soonish.

Edit - cross-posted with the above - Camo cloth you say? I might have something on that... Might fit with my bottom right confusion

You're sure right about that seam. The rest looks all 'roundy' though. Maybe one of the composite hulls?

Does anyone else think this is a cool conversation. Shermanising and "That aint no cast hull" in the same thread. A great read! And I'm really anxious about the results...

'Cos I might be looking at a cable behind him and seeing it as a joint/crease, rather than just a cable running across the Glacis. Thus giving the whole thing a rounded look to my eye.

Shall I come back when I'm not pissed?

@von poop it might be a crease in the fabric. But I am far from an expert. Hm. You're also right what evidence from photo's is concerned.

@owen @dave55 you might also be right. That's why you (forumgoƫrs) are the experts of course. And you are right about the big thread Dave. There were over 40.000 Shermans made, so that's a lot to write about.
