Owen, because most of the world is daft and doesn't know England has a flag other than the Union Jack - if you started waving the flag of England people would wonder who the hell you were - and lots of people think United Kingdom = England or Great Britain = England, never mind having a clue about Wales, Scotland, or Ireland. The cross of Saint George, Saint Patrick, and Saint Andrew are part of the Union flag but how many folks really understand what makes up any flag these days or why, never mind one with as rich a history as the Union Jack. Then again the Union Jack might just go away - after all the flag of England is +800 years old so will do nicely, just a matter of educating most of the world :)

There are lots of places in Quebec where everything is only French, and there are laws that say signage must be in French, or French and English (optional) but the French must be larger and more prominent than the English. Lots of double standards relating to this bilingual stuff - even French Immersion schools throughout Canada - if I want to immerse my kids in a second language that will be of value for them in the future it would be Spanish (2nd largest language spoken in North America) or Mandarin.

The Scots may simply be following the 400 year old tradition that has served Quebec very well. Never actually leave the confederation but in order to wring the maximum concessions from the national government, rattle the separation sabre every 5 years just to keep everyone nervous. No one has ever called them on the bluff.

One of the few matches I've ever watched in full. The Cross of St George, as I remember, has only been popular in recent years, don't remember seeing it much back then.
