This sounds like a 'What If' to me I'm not worried and have faith in the majority of Scotland to vote no unless they are all forced to watch Braveheart the night before polling.
Rich the english are just as bad for descrimating against us, Michael macintyre has made a career out of it. If you call an Irishman a paddy it's classed as discriminating but no one ever bats an Eyelid at calling us a jock! And for the record my wife is English!
That's news to me!!! Always wondered where the line was between friendly banter and discrimination. I was at a job interview once in London and I had to do a number of aptitude tests before getting grilled. Among these were spelling and vocabulary tests. In the interview after, I was asked "how did you find that" by one and the other spoke up before I could reply "sure, Irish people can't spell anyway". I think that may have fallen into the latter. The funny thing was, the reason why I did not end up getting the job was because I did not speak French or German! Anyway, back to the thread. No point getting upset over these things. They are not that important in the overall scheme of things.
Change the flag? Not an option in my opinion. From the many links provided in previous posts it appears the mechanism to change the Union flag is not at all clear anyway. The many other states/nations that have the Union flag incorporated in their flag might have something of a say anyway, and they have chosen to retain the Union flag in their's. Australia, New Zealand, Bermuda, Hawaii to name but a few and Hawaii is outstanding as an American State that incorporates the Union flag in it's own. I do hope Scotland chooses to remain in the UK but have my doubts. Salmond etc seem to be trying to stitch the vote up with reduction in voting age, selection of who is eligable (Scots in England, English in Scotland etc) and the wishy-washy White Paper that seems to pick and choose what 'independence' really means. Keep the Queen, keep the Pound, they already have their own Parliament (at huge expense) they seem to cherry pick the options whilst not really addressing the true implications. I don't really 'do' politics, but this seems to be one of the worst cases of subverting minority objectives to a wider political point and I hope it fails. Better the Union than the alternative complicated option. Sorry (Mods) if this is too political - not meant to be - but I would rather the Union a union of all the British. Thought we resolved that a few years ago.
Odd flag on the left. Looks like a combination of the Confederate battle flag and the state flag of South Carolina. I am wondering where it was flying and what the significance of it is. Was the photo made in the UK?
What are the goals of this separation, other that to show to the remainder of the world that the Scots hate the English? At least, that it what the reason appears to be to this somewhat interested Alabamian.

I find the debate interesting about keeping the pound. How ironic that a Scot founded the Bank of England and an Englishman founded the Bank of Scotland! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Paterson_%28banker%29 As for keeping the royalty, the Queen is a direct descendant of Mary Queen of Scots due to Elizabeth the 1st dying without an heir. To be truthful I'm not sure how many nationalities the Queen is descended from? Queen Victoria's husband was German and the Duke of Edinburgh is Greek I think? As for Braveheart the movie, it's just that, a movie. It's no more nearer the truth than a fly in the air. I was most disappointed to read that MacBeth is to be remade. I was most hopeful it would portray the real King MacBeth, but we are to settle for another Shakespeare version. It's a shame MacBeth couldn't have done Shakespeare for defamation of character. As for the debate and vote next year, I do hope North & South of the border will all ADULT UP. I doubt it though.
That depend from whom it comes. In your case, that's what I'll assume. But, it's not always the case. Roxy

No matter what the outcome of any vote this issue is bound to run and run. Our weekly local paper has a column that covers the main issues from 15, 25 and 35 years ago and you will not be surprised to know they are the same issues still being discussed today. I do not believe everything I read in the paper but recently there was an article that said people in Scotland get twice the financial subsidy those here in Yorkshire get - with Osbourne looking for a way to cut costs I would suggest he could do worse than start to canvass for a yes vote. But what do I know? Brian
25 readers' designs for a new union jack http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-25222891 I like this one the most.
Like your choice Owen. I was having a think about it as well and maybe both new flags could just be a simple white flag with Made In China written on it. No disrespect meant to the Chinese either, but it does appaul me that nearly everything I buy into the home, apart from food, is made there. It's so rare to see anything made in Britain these days. And Brian you are quite right about the subsidy issue, it does depend on what you read as the following 2 articles show. One shows the Scots putting more into the system, yet another says the opposite. But given the British Government will not talk to the Scottish Gov. about some crucial matters, it's going to be very hard to vote next year when all facts cannot be considered and such conflicting information is banded about. http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/the-staggers/2011/11/scotland-12288-union-public http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-16477990 Just for the record as a Scot, I don't hate the English, regardless of the history between our countries. But such open hostility as is already being displayed on here it does make one think. There a**e holes from every corner of the globe and when I met one it doesn't mean to say I have to end up hating their entire culture or people.
Reminds me of the stuff that went on here in the colony with Quebec wanting to separate - most west of Ontario didn't give a shit - requiring everything to be in French and English out here is really useless, the majority cowtowing to the minority. Biggest issue was even if they voted to leave - Canada refused to let them continue using our currency, and with the billions of dollars we send them for their social programs, of the like not seen anywhere else in the country ($5/day childcare etc) they couldn't afford to leave - especially when one factored in the per capita national debt they would have to repay on top of all the transfer payments they'd have to give up. I always thought the rest of Canada should vote to see if we wanted to kick them out as the threat to leave carried on for decades. Certainly not a simple situation, but you have to let them have their vote and then take it from there. Can't see why they'd change the Union Jack though, just say it's now England's flag and be done with it - but that makes too much sense and politicians are involved - maybe the English should vote on it if needed
I noticed that in Canada the Anglophone bits had to be bi-lingual but when went into Hull, Quebec it was ONLY in French . The Union Jack can never be England's flag*, we have our own. * though if you look at the crowd in the 1966 World Cup Final there aren't many Cross of St George's flags but lots of Union Flags, which I think was a bit daft but I wasn't born then. Maybe some of the older members can saw why the correct flag wasn't used.
