All of them awful. And as someone who lives in a country where flegs are already a highly contentious issue, I certainly wouldn't welcome any further mucking about. http://splinteredsunrise.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/uda-israeli-flag.jpg http://www.hootsmon.com/gigpics/Ireland2005/ulster_scots.JPG http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FDAVUylUFZs/TkLdYyEY6II/AAAAAAAABZA/QC4wO7b-SV4/s400/Flags5.jpg Agree.
If the Jocks go they can take their flag with them. :scot: Why should it remain ? What would we be called as it wouldnt be a ''United Kingdom'' anymore.
Cos the Queen will still be Head of State of all 4 countries? Cos to change it would be a costly pain in the .... And not just for us. http://www.naa.gov.au/Images/Australian%20Flag%20-%20Image_tcm16-47870.jpg Britain and Northern Ireland ? No more Great.
When people use the term Great Britain (in sport or whatever else you can think of) instead of the United Kingdom they still use the Union Flag and not this Point is, does it make much difference.
I'd suggest that without the Jocks (or the Kiwis, Cannuck, Ozzies, etc) your flag would be German! Roxy
In my own personal case, without the Irish - or the Germans - I wouldn't be here chatting about flags.
Yeah, with the Rising Sun in the middle!!! It wouldn't have lasted long though as I'm sure us English would have pi**ed them off too much to bother with us!!
Maybe the creator of the second flag reads ww2talk? Inspired by my earlier (and deliberately grotesque effort) here: Personally I don't feel the Union Flag needs to change if Scotland decides to go its own way. The UK still shares that common history that created the flag in the first place. e.g. Hawaii still retains the union flag within its own flag despite now being an outpost of the USA. Which brings up the question, if the 'Kingdom of Britain and Northern Ireland' or whatever the rest of us would call ourselves did institute a new flag design would Australia and New Zealand follow? (insert little animated icon of an open can of worms) But the more important question is should my focus next year be copying Scottish battalion war diaries just in case they move from London up to Edinburgh?
Without the Jocks spoiling for a fight on pub, street, village, team, battalion, denomination, region or national level, we wouldn't have got in half the wars in the first place ! Whatever they choose, it should be something with an image of Alec Salmond on it, as a sign of eternal Anglo-Saxon gratitude.
The English kings were picking fights with the French long before the English and the scots sided together, the highland clans didn't side with the English till the 1700's to which we have been deployed to protect the crowns empire so you cannot say we spoil for a fight when all we have done is protected the crown, 200 years the regiments have sworn allegiance to the English crown, black watch being the first and the Argylls and sutherland highlanders being one of the last. Independence is no more than a farse and a pipe Dream, Alex salmond wants a legacy and there is too many foreigners up here who will oppose it
I've got a Scots surname, but was born in England. I have family in Scotland; MacDonald, Mckenzie, Bruce, etc. (but no 'Campbells' :biggrin. Both of my brothers are married to Scots; one of these ladies had an Irish maiden name and the other an English one; the latter had to marry an Englishman to get a Scots surname. My sister is married to a Scot. Two of my wife's three sisters are married to Scots, the other an Englishman with an Irish surname. On my passport it says I'm British, not English, Scots, Irish or Welsh; albeit I have ancestors from all four. My family is not unusual. So tell me, why would I want anything other than the 'Union Jack' for my nation's flag; we are united in our shared history and our blood. Best, Steve.
So let's hope it's a ''No'' vote to this question "Should Scotland be an independent country?" next year then.
Who actually gets to vote? Ethnic Scots irrespective of where they live? Everyone currently living in Scotland irrespective of their ethnicity and therefore including ex-pat English etc? Anyone born in Scotland?.....no matter how you look at it, it seems farcical....and what about the rest of us who will be affected by this? Salmond et al seem to want to keep the Pound etc....in which case it amounts to a potential Federal system....in which case why don't we all get a vote.....how about UDI for Yorkshire?.....or Lincolnshire?.....would also be a farce?.....but that is effectively what Salmond et al are asking for.
The thing is, Owen, aren't you a bit fed up with all the snide remarks and the anti-English sentiment ? I've got to the point where I think 'Let them go then...' My personal feeling is that there is too much shared history and a walk around the Cemeteries of France and Flanders shows too many from both nations side by side for it to seem logical to split things up....but if that's what they really want, and they dislike us so much....Bugger 'em then.
I've got broad shoulders & can take the stick but if they want to go & vote to go then you can't argue with that. Be a shame though.
* 'Aye' to that Owen, I have family and clients up in Scotland, and have met friends and acquaintances of these, and I have asked most the question. As you might guess, some say it would be a big mistake for Scotland to leave the Union and others can't wait for Independence. Generally, the latter category appears to be populated by people who know the history of the ancient conflicts between the two countries, but have an emotional and insular view. The former by people who have ventured further and have a wider less emotional view of domestic and world matters. One of my brothers in law, who is no lover of the English (all down to the history of the ancient conflicts), has said that Scotland without England is a very bad idea and will be catastrophic for Scotland. However, he thinks the SNP at the Local Government level are excellent at 'getting the bins emptied'; meaning they are good at providing local services. I sincerely hope the Scots vote 'No', because I don't think a 'yes' vote is good for any of us. United we stand, divided we fall... Best, Steve.
