What is the last WW2 Film or Series you saw?

I have had several minor issues since retiring in 2022...it's getting on my nerves now!! Lately, its uveitis, a minor umbilical hernia and poor neck and left shoulder movement. I had an episode of gout Martin....back in January 2016. I don't normally drink, but decided to toast the memory of Lemmy after his death in December 2015 by downing a shot glass of Jack Daniels every morning for a month, next thing you know I have gout!! Tablets got ride almost instantaneously and it has never returned.

 

Like the fact you raised a few glasses to the late, great Lemmy bamboo43 . " We're Motorhead & we play Rock & Roll !"

Can't complain about the NHS myself, they saved my life back in June 2024. I had gone into something called Adrenal Crisis and was hours away from kicking the bucket. If it hadn't been for the superb Consultant I saw who correctly diagnosed the condition I had I wouldn't be here now.

 

Getting the thread back on subject, I watched yet another episode of the 5 Select "Battlefront World War 2" series. This series swings between excellent to appalling from episode to episode. This one covered the Battle of Berlin and was better than most. As usual the combat footage was top quality, and for once the narrative was informative. I didn't learn anything new, but then again I didn't expect to. The series is definitely better when they aren't claiming the Americans won he war on their own.

 

Not really complaining about the NHS. I find once you're in the system the service is good. It's the communication between the various sections I find frustrating. Glad you came through in 2004 mate. Lemmy is an icon in my household:

Glad you’ve not had another attack mate, though sorry you’re having all those other issues. You hope for a nice happy retirement and then bang! Had to look up uveitis - nasty.

I had what I now believe to have been a gout attack in early 2023, but then nothing until January this year. It came right after my hoovering up the last of the Belgian chocolates I got for my birthday, and there were a lot , so I figure it must have been my love of choccy that tipped the balance.

Three more bouts followed so I thought I really should sort this. I’m doing very well managing it by diet at the moment, thanks to Sue who has been brilliant at reading up on it all. Drinking a lot of water now too.

As an added bonus, I’ve lost a lot of weight, which I needed to. So whilst the gout is unpleasant, rather perversely I have benefitted to a great degree and it’s been a wake up call. I assume the doctor will also give me some magic pills, probably what you had.

I just saw "Pressure." I really liked several of the actors, especially Andrew Scott as Stagg. Brendan Fraser is a good Eisenhower, I thought. It's easy to play Ike just as a nice guy or a bland chairman of the board, but Fraser shows that he had the hard side which all commanders must have. Kerry Condon was a good Kay Summersby. She didn't play her as particularly sexy, but as the confidante that a harried and overworked man needs. (Harry Butcher, who also filled that role for Ike, is simply left out of the story.) Fraser, Scott, and Condon make the movie worth seeing. There are some weaknesses, though. Damian Lewis, an actor I like, could be a good Montgomery but his part is poorly written and emerges as yet another Monty caricature. Indeed, the script is the main problem. I was particularly irked by the recurrence of contemporary phases like "I'm all done with x," "bottom line," etc. An unnecessary beach landing scene was tacked on, and this looks very much like a replay of Pvt. Ryan only not nearly as good. I'm not familiar enough with the technical details of exactly how SHAEF functioned at Southwick House so I can't address that. The story of Exercise Tiger is garbled, as is Utah Beach. And speaking of that beach landing scene, when O WHEN are we going to see BRITISH AND CANADIAN TROOPS COMING ASHORE? All you see are U.S. troops, for Pete's sake. But don't let all this put you off, go see it for the actors and their performances.

 

Yet another episode of the 5 Select "Battlefront" series. This one was rather good, covering the campaign by German surface raiders in the Indian Ocean during the early part of WW2 , focusing in particular on the activities of the "Penguin". I had no idea that the Kriegsmarine deployed warships in the Indian Ocean disguised as merchant vessels during WW2 (I was aware of such a campaign in WW1). The "Penguin" operated as far south as Antarctica, and also off the Australian coast. A fascinating episode.

I note they refer to the "Pinguin" not Penguin. At sea 15/6/1940-8/5/1941 (sunk). See: German auxiliary cruiser Pinguin - Wikipedia

Quite remarkable given the Pinguin was sunk that there appears to be a good amount of genuine B&W filmed footage aboard. Perhaps they passed on the footage to Admiral Scheer? Which too was active in the southern oceans; 31/10/1940-30/03/1941.There is no Wiki record of the two ships meeting.

 

Started watching the C4 series " Dictator - The Hitler Interviews" Based on interviews done with Hitler's friends & acquaintances, and the likes of Speer & Von Schirach etc in the 60's & 70's. What struck me most about the first episode was how virtually everyone interviewed were unrepentant Nazi's. They didn't try to hide it.

 

I get the same feeling everytime I see the recorded interviews of Hitler's private secretary, Traudl Junge. Perfectly willing to talk about the last days in the bunker, but no sense of remorse or tragedy.

 

Yes Dan M , I agree. Every time I have seen the Traudl Junge interviews I keep expecting her to start singing the "Horst Wessel Lied". Absolutely still under Hitler's spell. Scary.

 

Oh dear just watched Lucky Strike, don't know how im going to get 1hour and 40 minutes of my life back !!!!

 

Enjoyed watching The Dam Busters again today, on Amazon Prime.

 

Do the movie makers even know that Camp Lucky Strike was the largest US Army transportation camp in WWII? In Normandy. So lets name a movie set in the Battle of the Bulge after it!
