Made the missus watch "A Hasty Heart", Richard Todd as a Cameron highlander wounded and dying, but doesn't know it until late in the film, Ronald Regan played Yank. She had some tears.!! And 'The Sea Shall not have them' filmed in and around Felixstowe, seemed strange near the end to see German soldiers running around Landguard Fort to fire on the RAF Rescue launch.!! Enjoyed them both, again.

Just finished the book "The cruel Sea" by Nicolas Monsarrat. Tohether with "Das Boot" the best WW2 maritime book. I saw the movie "The cruel Sea" (filmed 1953) is also one of the best movies (after "Das Boot" again") about maritime warfare.

I watched Mission of Honor on Netflix last night and actually enjoyed it. As with most ww2 flicks you do have to suspend disbelief, suffer through he inevitable romantic interludes and the many inaccuracies.
The film is dedicated to the Polish 303 Squadron, the highest scoring unit of the Battle of Britain. The most refreshing and rare part was seeing a Canadian central character throughout the movie. In August 1940, Johnny Kent, from Winnipeg, was posted to RAF Northolt as a commander with the Royal Air Force’s newly-formed No. 303 Polish Squadron. He commanded this unit until October 11, when they were withdrawn for rest. In June 1941, Kent was promoted to Wing Commander and again was posted back to RAF Northolt, this time lead the Polish Wing of four squadrons.

John Alexander "Johnny" Kent, DFC & Bar (23 June 1914 – 7 October 1985), was nicknamed "Kentski" (sometimes given as "Kentowski") by his Polish comrades. Kent's final total of wartime victories included 13 aircraft destroyed, three probables and three damaged.

Last night I watched the 2016 released Polish film 'Hatred'. The film covers the little known (in the West) episode of history where Ukrainian Nationalists and Polish communities were involved in a violent war against each other in the disputed eastern Polish area of Volhynia (now part of western Ukraine), which was essentially a war of ethnic cleansing during the German occupation. From 1943 to 1945 over 40,000 Poles were murdered by the Ukrainian Nationalists with a smaller number, although still numbering in the thousands, of Ukrainians murdered by Poles. The film states 80-100,000 Poles were murdered and 15,000 Ukrainians but Wiki states the lower number I've given.
The story starts pre-war with a village wedding which gives a hint at the underlying tensions stoked by the German and then Russian invasion of 1939 and then the German occupation after Operation Barbarossa in 1941 with the story told through the life of a young lady at the wedding.
If you liked the Russian film Come And See then this is right up your street but be aware that this film is brutal and doesn't shy away from showing the atrocities committed by both sides.

Best WWII movie that I have seen in many years.

Japanese officers were depicted as smart and businesslike. No stereotypes at all that I could see.
    Highly recommend this one.

This afternoon I watched the Polish film Westerplatte Resists which is on Netflix. This film was made in 1967 and is about the small band of Polish soldiers and sailors who were stationed on the Westerplatte peninsular at Danzig at the outbreak of WW2. The peninsular was used as an ammunition depot and has the distinction of being targeted by the first shots of the war from the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein that was anchored in the harbour.

    Another terrific episode of Combat!

Guest star is John Cassavetes (later Victor Franco in The Dirty Dozen).

They even had some type of German truck that looks great. I can't ID it. Maybe a small Brockway or Diamond T with fake head hights?

So the Canadian gets to play the truck thief! Always the stereotypes.
