Now on Netflix in the UK, a film from 2016 with the Holocaust as its background. The film, released in 2016, is called Denial and is about the libel case that David Irving brought against Deborah Lipstadt and Penguin Books in 2000. Timothy Spall plays the part of Irving and Rachel Weisz plays the part of Lipstadt, with Tom Wilkinson as Lipstadt's barrister.
It has 3/5 Stars on the Netflix rating which I would say is about right; it isn't a blockbuster by any stretch of the imagination but it is a well made and interesting film none the less.

Does the World at War box set cover (much of the Italian Campaign?) I've seen very little of it on the TV when they do show it!

Going through my DVD collection at the moment and couldn't even remember this one. All a bit daft to start with, but doesn't shy away from killing off the cast to bring the dangers home to you.

I loved every second of the World at War series but one of my favorite parts is when they asked a Battle of Britain pilot if they thought of themselves as sportsmen or knights of the air or something like that. He said, "Not as far as I was concerned, I hated them. They wanted to enslave us. I wanted to kill them."

Watched a bit of "Empire of the Sun" the other day. Kind of a long movie, but this part is the best.

The best part of this part imho is about 1:30 into the clip, when the P-51 pilot opens his cockpit and waves at Jim atop the tower. Really cool stuff.

Also, that portion of the clip reminds me of the story my dad told me when of he was in Korea during the war. He said that USN pilots would fly over their trenches inverted, and dump garbage on them, then buzz them at treetop level on the way back to the carriers. Well, there really weren't too many trees on the front line, but he said that they were flying real low, sucking tents and camouflage nets up as they flew by. Really making nuisances of themselves, officers and all. They probably thought that it was funny. Seems like they would do that to the Chicoms instead of their own people, or at least on the Marines. After a few times too many, dad said that they would belt thousands of rounds of .50 caliber tracers together, and when the Navy fly-boys would come a calling, they'd load the 50s with the tracer belts and fire up in the air, but not directly at them. That must've upset the fly-boys something fierce. They broke off their "garbage run" and headed off in the direction of the sea. Later they got a lecturing from the officer of the day about firing on "friendly" aircraft, and about remedial Allied aircraft recognition. When told of what the fly-boys were doing, the officer in charge of the lecture stormed off in the direction of the HQ bunker. After that episode, the Navy no longer made garbage runs on the US 17th Infantry Regiment, and the remedial lectures ended. Not sure about garbage runs on the Chicoms or Marines though. Dad said that this scene in the movie reminded him of their incidents with the Navy. Funny how something like this movie scene triggers memories like that.

Regarding The Train.........I think that it must have created terror in the minds of those in enemy military formations whether it be by road or rail to witness themselves being picked out as a target by Allied fighters and fighter bombers. The Allies developed daytime air superiority over the continent after D Day with the tactical air forces of the RAF and USAAF reigning supremely over the skies of Europe.

Falaise...... a good example where from the carnage, some Allied pilots declared that the stench of battle could be evident in the skies.

Then there were the bomber escorts of the USAAF who could freeboot at targets of opportunity on the ground....in the end no German movement was safe from these marauders.

However as the clip shows,it's difficult to avoid the possibility of friendly fire where recognition fails or with planned engagements, intelligence shortfalls.

Just watched Jeremy Clarkson’s “War Stories” which I went looking for on YouTube after a reference to “Operation Chariot” in a book I was reading. Two cracking stories - immediately went and bought it from Amazon Prime Video for a measly £2.99 so I can watch it again in better quality.

Might have to give his PQ17 doc a go as well.
