That's in good nick for the age - is it restored.

I remember it being featured inside the gate fold cover of a Fairport Convention album!

Do it all in one with this. Make yourself some Sloe Gin (or in this case Vodka). If you decide to make some, go easy on the sugar. Most recipes have too much. Wait 'til Oct/Nov for sloe's to become available.

Finally found the time to go through this one...

My drinking buddy in Devon calls me a "sad b*st*rd", because I'm a veggie that has a weakness for real ale (his preferred weakness is DoomBar, which is pretty much (hand-drawn) out of the question, so I have to settle for bottled ale... London Pride is up there, as is (Achtung!) Spitfire (worked in both breweries a number of times)... I like the Black Isle Brewery's products - any of them, pretty much, but I have to give a nod to the Hebridean Brewery Company which has a classically named product...

    2008 0901 Beserker.jpg

Not had much mention of Weston's cider so I'll plug for their Old Rosie scrumpy, which has been known to make me fall over (literally) ...

I used to work (on occasion) at the old London Guinness plant in NW10, now well and truly gone, and the chief brewer let it be known that Guinness was suitable for sad b's like me... much to the disgust of veggies, since the recall to the Liffy, the company will not respond for a request for the answer to the question, "is it suitable for veggies?" - (Southern Comfort is the same - they won't say) - so I don't touch the stuff - stuff 'em...

Ahh... now to the good stuff... uisghe beatha... the water of life, in it's "single-malt" form... On my way up to the Island I usually call in on the Muir of Ord Distillery, not far off the road from Inverness to Ullapool and buy a couple of bottles... last time I was up was two summers back and I only finished the second bottle before Christmas last... my dad was a serious collector (had about 800-900 miniature malts, with no duplications) and an occasional drinker... when he passed in 2001 I was left with some full size bottles that were somewhat select (my sister expressed a desire to split up the collection, but I let her have it as I did not feel it right to split it - Gawd only knows what she did with it - we don't talk these days)... I contacted some specialist sites and enquired as to their value, not being a connoisseur I would happily have traded something rare for a few Glen Ords', but then I thought it would be nice (and some of the site members agreed) to open them slowly and savour them over some time, as they all felt they were somewhat special items...

So, the first I opened for Christmas two years back was a 1972, 12 year old, Talisker, distilled in 1960...

    Malt 008.jpg

Do I really need to tell you how good that bottle tasted...? an occasional drink I savoured for six months, and the last two drams I saved for drinking on a visit to Devon to see my carnivoristic buddy...

Hmm... just finished a bottle of Jura... what next...?

Oh yeah, a nice merlot goes down a treat on occasion too...

other than that its back to my Beck/Grolsch Gold, Chilean merlot, Southern Comfort, Talisker Whisky

My husband makes his own cider (from a kit). £12 for 40 pints, it's lovely stuff, if a little lethal at times. We have many bottles of Port which remain unopened, and move from house to house with us. One is a bottle from the Special Air Service Sgts Mess which was given to him by a friend. I don't think he will ever drink it. I think he should and just keep the bottle. What is the point in having it and not drinking it? Perhaps I am missing something!

They must do a roaring trade in that SAS Port.
S'not bad either - not great, but not bad.

They must do, I bet they charge enough for it too. Luckily it was a present. Think it will only get disposed of when it gets smashed in a house move or something! I can't drink Port any more. I drank too much of it at a mess do at Gib Barracks quite a few years ago. Even the smell of it now brings back hideous memories!

Not sure it's my favourite, but it does have a WW2 link. Wadworth Swordfish Ale 'sponsors' the Royal Navy Historic Flight Swordfish aircraft and crew: it is Wadworth 6X with a tot of Pussers rum.

I received a bottle of Maker's Mark for Christmas.

It's good but I think I still like Wild Turkey better, which is less expensive.

    Anyone ever try Knob Creek?

    What a great thread

No mate, it is not a marketing gimmick. It is one of the oldest breweries in Ireland. But you may have had a bad pint or the stuff sold in foreign markets may not be the same (much like the wishy washy lagers we get).

Either way, even at its best, it is not a patch on Hobgoblin, but ales and bitters are not a big thing over here so it Smithwicks or nothing in the pub and have to get bottles of the good stuff from the off licence.

For the most part it is a bottle or two of red wine for me though!

I'm not much for beer or wine. Whisky is my beverage of choice. Preferably Edradour Scotch or Redbreast from Ireland.

    Married to a Kentuckian... ;)

Ian... the poor wee folk of Islay will be horrified that you've just attributed that bottle of fine malt whisky to a bigger Island with only the one distillery...

Oddly enough, the largest Hebridean Island has no distillery... now that is a dram... err, a dream to be reckoned with... :pipe:

Whoops, fingers not doing what the brain was thinking. Would that distillery dirth be down to the activities of the 'Wee Free'?

I find both excellent. Maker's Mark has a special place in my heart for romantic reasons, but I also like the sweetish taste of it. Knob's Creek is an excellent whisky. There are now a lot of artisanal US whiskies that beat the pants off any Scottish offering.

    All the best

As for beer, living in Hackney, I have a choice of London Fields Brewery, and of course the Hackney Brewery. I strongly prefer the latter, but won't turn down the Black Path Porter if you insist.

    All the best

I'll ply them with Knob's Creek, and they'll switch sides.
