It's an American torpedo or dive bomber (I can't think of any other Allied planes with that config). Helldiver or Devastator?
It is one of those - there are probably enough clues to say which! Give your reasons so I know you're not guessing (I'm sounding like my maths teacher now!)
Devastator - it only had one rear-firing MG, and the others had two. If I'd actually looked up the specs instead of just looking at the pictures, I'd have answered properly the first time!! Doh! Having said that, I'm sure I've seen a picture of a Devastator with two MGs.
Yes: a TBD-1 Devastator. The date that I deleted was 1937. Going by the basic layout, there are plenty of other candidates - the Vought SB2U Vindicator, the Vultee Vengeance, any number of IJNAF types, and I wondered if someone might guess at a Fairey Battle. But of all these, AFAIK the only one that had a single 0.5 in rear gun (normally) was the Devastator Adrian
Thought I would kick-start this quiz. Anyone know what this is? OK I can't get this one but I'll give someone else a clue: the letters in the serial numbers of Finnish aircraft of this period derived from the type of aircraft (often - or always?): so the Ripons in the previous question had RI- numbers; Brewster Buffaloes were numbered BW- . So the SM here may well be a clue - Savoia Marchetti perhaps? - but I can't find a match for the exact type. Adrian
There's a great site on the Finnish Air Force (can't remember if it's been flagged here before): Backwoods Landing Strip - Finnish Air Force Aircraft
Letov S.218 "Smolik" (Czech) Damn and blast you! Quite correct. Your turn! The Finns fitted it with a 145hp engine because the original 128hp was not powerful enough. Also, I used the book "Fighter over Finland" by Eino Luukkansen which contains a lot of photos.
Damn and blast you! You seem to have been transported back to the C18th, Morse!! Quite correct. Your turn! The Finns fitted it with a 145hp engine because the original 128hp was not powerful enough. Firstly, I doff my hat to Adrian - I didn't know about the coding system for the Finnish aircraft (even at Christmas we learn something new), but I found the site a couple of weeks ago. The plane was pretty old by the time of the war, and according to site was used as a trainer (and there was even a 162hp engine). Also, I used the book "Fighter over Finland" by Eino Luukkansen which contains a lot of photos. Did you scanthe picture because I couldn't find that particular one on the inter-web? Great try Morse - but you just forgot that a very bored man with a computer has a lot of time on his hands :icon-mrgreenbandit:

I try and use my collection of 2700 plus books for the pictures, which means they cant be traced on the web! Now that I've got my new scanner, I must start doing that too. One of these days, we must compare books morane-saulnier MS 406 AOL Search | Image | Browse= Nope (I thought someone would say that)
