Thought this was an interesting reminder that history isn't 'linear' or centred in one location.

Very thought provoking article and merely highlights how people perceive History and even their place on the planet!

The thing that annoys me more than people assuming the Norman invasion was the only thing that happened that year, is most not knowing that old William the Bastard wasn't even the first person to invade England in 1066.

That said, the Normans were pretty bad ass, so maybe it's forgiveable.

Harold put up a grand ol fight to be fair. If he hadnt had to clobber some pesky scandinavians at Stanford Bridge, who knows what might have happened at Hastings?

The article ties in with a series on Radio 4. This week's was about November 5th and the next episode will be 1066. It was quite good I thought.

It's one of my favouritest periods of history because of all the what ifs.

Was just thinking, what if Harold had seen off the Normans in the Battle of Hastings. Would the Germans still have invaded Poland?

Didn't the descendants of Duke William's army make the return journey 'back home' to Normandy to chase those pesky Germans back across the Rhine? :) Just when was that .... ? Ah, yes ......... 6 June 1944!

    Me too.
I'm tired or R4, and now mostly mooch on R4 extra for the Navy Lark etc. these days, but every now and then the original channel still turns up little gems which keep one from fully shaking the lifetime habit.
