As the begining satement implies i simply would like to hear who likes what and who thinks what is the best.

My personal favorite, which i have come to gounds is not the best(UNTIL I CAN COMPLAIN ENOUGH TO GET SOMETHING:mad111: )
is the Tiger heavy tank. The King Tiger is cool to but was used far later in the war and gas took out those things as good as the planes did.

    Dave,

its been pretty much done to death here and im a newbie.

Sorry to be very boring buts Its pretty hard to discount the T34 really. The soviets picked up and copied all the best ideas like the Christie suspension and the Maybech Diesal They designed a tank which not only was cheap and easy to make but had a lot of scope for future devoplment.

You could see what the Germans where thinking with thE tiger, they new they could never match allies for quantity so designed a tank that was qualivitly better. If that was the right thing to do is open to some debate.

Maybe it would have made more sense to contrate on the Panther as a replacment for Panzer iv instead of keeping Panzer 4's and splitting production between Tiger and Panther and adding them as extra breatkthru squadrons??? I dunno....

    Churchill Crocodile.
If you ever fancy a really good shufti at a Crocodile there's one parked on the street (without it's trailer) outside the Dday Museum on Southsea sea-front on full-time public display, a rare opportunity to clamber all over it (which the Museum seems to tolerate) and have a really good look.:)For free!

:) There's a Grizzly and a 3.7 AA gun to clamber over as well. The Museum's pretty good too. Overlord Tapestry well worth a shufti and The Royal Marine's museum down the road (walking distance) was always good but I haven't been in there for years.

They still there? I kind of assumed the whole area would be flattened for a retail park by now...mind it might be for the best if they did.
(treat my 'walking' suggestion to RM museum with caution if you're in a hurry, it's allllll the way down the seafront.).
Say hello to the Churchill for me, I fell off her last Christmas day!

And If you find yourself with lots of spare time for some reason Fort Nelson on portsdown hill is the Royal Armories Large exhibits place, Nice Sexton, 88, lots of esoteric artillery and again...FREE!:)
    Cheers,
    Adam

Hmm. For sheer obstinacy, i would have to say (and this pains me as it isn't British) the T34. Or Gruber's Little Tank.

Got to agree with Gnomey it's the Churchill Crocodile for me. It may not be as sexy as a Tiger or Panther dashing about the woodwork with a big thing at the front, but to have the enemy wave the white flag by just appearing at the scene, that's the dog's for me!

Patton's take on the King Tiger was that it was simply too big, too heavy and too slow. He said that there were few bridges you can cross with it that wouldn't collapse under its enormous weight, it was vulnerable in moving position. He believed the Germans made a mistake as it was rarely a problem with the Allies, they could flee it until the air or artillery got there. The Tiger I was probably the best overall tank, but their biggest bang for the buck was probably the Panzer IV or the Panther. If they hadn't have come out with the M-26 Pershing, I would vote the Tiger the best tank of the war, though the Tiger had some real vulnerabilities. It broke down a lot, threw tracks with very little encouragement, and was subject to small arms fire because of the design of its radiator on top. The Tiger more than met its match in the Pershing but they were around too late to really get a repuation. It was the first tank the Tiger would have to run from as it had a 90mm cannon on it everybit the equal of the feared 88 on the Tiger.

The Russians had some pretty nice tanks in the Joseph Stalin series (the IS series or I=Joseph S=Stalin tanks).

1.5 tons per round, 6 rounds per hour!
4 completed??? Adam, Eve, Thor and Odin. (could be more...) makes a sturmtiger look a bit camp. might even be a survivor at Kubinka (Oh holy place)

    38cm RW61 auf Sturmmorser Tiger.

Only 18 converted, chassis a bog-standard tiger 1 with a 38cm rocket gun bolted on. range:4,600 metres, issued to Sturmorsser co's 1001, 1002,1003(encyclopedia of German tanks, chamberlain, doyle, Jentz)

From what I recall it was a bloody stupid (though cool-looking)weapon, handy for wiping out most of a house but extremely vulnerable after that one shot. Serves anyone right for designing a tank to assist in city-fighting....Ooh those crazy Nazi's!!
There's definitely one at Kubinka, Uber-rare.
