Just began "Struggle for the Middle Sea", by Vincent O´Hara. Even as it means backtracking a little bit, it is worth the effort. Book gives interesting coverage to the naval struggle for the Med, and includes lots of maps and detailed tables containing names and after-battle status of the vessels involved, as backup for the accounts of the better known (and many obscure ones, too) battles that took place east of the Pillars of Hercules (plus Dakar).

Just purchased 'Victory- New Zealand Airmen And The Fall of Germany' by Max Lambert. This is his third book about Kiwi airmen in Europe the first being Night after Night' (About Kiwi's in Bomber Command) and the second being 'Day after Day' (Kiwi's in Fighter Command).
Still trying to deal with the reading backlog, just began a cloak-and-dagger tandem about Hellas: "Sons of Odysseus: SOE Heroes in Greece", by Alan Ogden, and "Classical Spies: American Archaeologists with the OSS in WW2 Greece", by Susan Heuck Allen.
About to begin 'Flight by Elephant' by Andrew Martin. The story of a daring rescue on the Assam/Burma borders during the retreat in 1942.
There is some video footage of the retreat available on Youtube. A very interesting and daring rescue.

I picked up two books the other day from Barnes & Knoble. Figured it was time to cash in at least part of a gift certificate that my niece gave me for Christmas. Anyway, the first one is the 3rd and final installment of the liberation trilogy from Rick Atkinson, "The Guns of Last Light". I was going to pick up the paperback edition, since it is a lot cheaper (about $23.00 USD) and the first of his two installments I already have in paperback. The cashier asked if I would prefer a hardback edition that had a small blemish on the top of the book. Seems that someone lightly brushed a black marker on it and left a half inch long mark on it. It was for sell for $9.98. Ok I said, what a bargain! The hardback went for $40.00, so I decided that I could live with a slightly blemished book that no one can see unless I pointed it out to them. The other book is "Failures of the Presidents". Of course it covers at least one major faux pas of each US President from George Washington to George W. Bush. It should make for interesting reading.
