    Hello everyone,

Allow me to explain a short backstory to get this thread started. My Great Uncle served during the Second World War in the Westminster Dragoons from D-Day until the end of the war. He passed away many years ago and never really spoke to anyone about his time during the war. I know a small amount about his time serving but due to him never speaking about it, most of the things I know are educated guess more that anything. I know the main movements and tasks the Westminster Dragoons completed during the Invasion of Europe but I would like to find out finer details such as, his crewmates, tank number, tank commander etc. He kept all of his personal letters and documents in a small sweets tin, which is where most of our information on him has come from. So far I have been able to figure that we was part of C Squadron WDs but I don't know which troop he was in unfortunately. I also believe he was either a Gunner or Loader inside his flail tank, I am not sure which of these roles he did but I believe him and the other solider in picture 2 operated the main gun together. This is pretty much where the information on him ends. I know 13 Crabs of C Squadron landed at King Sector on Gold Beach during D-Day and I think I know 12 of the 13 tank commanders names. Lt Pear, Cpt Bell, Cpl McCall, Cpl Walker, Sgt Birch, Cpl Rider, Major Sutton, Sgt Webb, Cpl Wild, Cpl Moore, Cpl Thorpe, Lt Hoban (Correct me if I'm wrong). His name was TROOPER James Hand 14306264 (Picture 1). I've attached some pictures below, please take a look and see what you think especially if you recognise any of the other soldiers. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks Everyone.

Your father didn't belong to 2 flails of the 3th Troop of the C Squadron with the commanders Lt. Pear and Sgt. Birch. All were killed exept trooper Whitford.
The crew of the thirth flail survived. Commander was Cpl. Shaw..

Have you sent for his records? They would at least tell you, I think, what he was trained as.

  5. The 13th Crab in KING Sector of GOLD Assault Area was L cpl SAVORY's.

I have not seen any mention of a Tpr Hand in the various docs.

Looking at the fifth picture, the C1 on the next crab might imply he was in 1Troop.
