Were the Germans really surprised by the M3 Grant

Contrary to what is implied in much that's written, the German intelligence knew about the tank prior to Gazala. They may have underestimated its performance, but expected about 144 of them to be lined up against them.

How surprising were the M3 Grant tanks to the Germans?

Really interesting thought. I like this 'picking away at accepted details' stuff.
(Though, in truth; anyone would technically be 'surprised' on seeing the weird-looking Grant/Lee for the first time.)

On some of the IWM reals of interviews of veterans the opinion was expressed that on first seeing it, they thought it was a First World War tank.

I knew I'd read about him years ago and tracked it down to February 2017, on another website, no longer active. Another member there added a long article on Col. Jarrett and his endeavours in "Tech Int" or Weapons Intelligence, almost worthy of a thread in itself: GEORGE BURLING JARRETT (1901 - 1974): THE ORIGINS OF MODERN U.S. ORDNANCE TECHNICAL INTELLIGENCE- PART II - Small Arms Review

    The member also posted:
The first article is on: GEORGE BURLING JARRETT (1901 - 1974): AN APPRECIATION PART I: AMASSING A WORLD CLASS COLLECTION - Small Arms Review

More than enough to read and absorb!

The German Newsreel is comparing a Panther to a General Lee here, at around 2mins 45secs in, for some reason...

    July 1944.

The specific bit of the German Newsreel is also discussed here...

As comparing what was presented to the more general population etc.

Presumably, by context there should be some prior German Newsreel introducing the German population to this style of "American tank", at some point earlier.

Edit : Somewhat earlier... this seems to say events depicting January 1943...
