Thought I'd add this link to the thread - Welsh Guards Museum. Seems well worth a visit if The Taffs are your area of interest.

    The Welsh Guards Collection
The Welsh Guards Collection is a magnificent exhibition of uniforms, arms, artefacts and memorabilia, which depict “the life in the Welsh Guards” since its formation in 1915.

This official collection of the Welsh Guards regiment was started by Curator Stan Evans in 1995 and is now situated at Park Hall Countryside Experience Shropshire.

The Collection is open to the public and can be viewed by visitors to Park hall.

Every one of the 2000 plus artifacts are authentic and come with individual stories imparted personally by a very capable and enthusiastic team of volunteers all ex serving Welsh Guardsman at your service. We are also proud of offer over 1000 recruit squad photos chronologically catalogued for families and visitors to view at their leisure. This is probably the largest collection of squad photographs of any one regiment anywhere. We offer a photo copying service for those who may have lost all trace of these ancestors.

From The Times, Saturday, July 15, 1944:

    WELSH GUARDS IN ITALY

    CONTRASTS IN WARFARE
A military observer writes:- A battalion of the WELSH GUARDS has an illustrious record in Italy. Thee days after it landed it was in action on Mount Cerasola, on the Garigliano front. For 10 days the Welshmen held the summit against desperate German counter-attacks, and in the face of continuous shelling and mortaring. It was so cold that their clothes froze on their bodies; they had no shelter but stone singers, and the journey down the mountain with the wounded took more than 20 hours. The commanding officer, suffering from frostbite, refused to leave his men until he was given a direct order to do do by the brigadier.

From a mountain top the Welshmen passed to dugouts under the ruins of Cassino. This type of warfare, with the enemy so close that one could not talk, let alone sing, imposed an even greater strain upon them. But their Welsh humour was undimmed. They drew a picture of Hitler and displayed it from a forward position for the Germans' approval. It met with a shower of grenades, which gave away the enemy's position.

The battalion was in Cassino when it fell, but was given no time for celebration, and a few days later was in action on Mount Piccolo, blocking the road to Rome. Here it fought a bitter action, reminiscent of Cerasola, against fanatical German parachutists. Snipers took a heavy toll, one company lost all its officers, but aided by tanks the Welshman helped to clear the hill.

    GUARDS HONOUR CITY OF BRUSSELS

    A STATUE IN UNIFORM

BRUSSELS, July 29. - Lining a back street of one of the oldest quarters of Brussels, a guard of honour of the WELSH GUARDS today saluted the life-size statue of a two-year-old boy - the Brussels "manneken," mascot of the city - by presenting him with the first British suit of his already extensive wardrobe. The statue was dressed in the full uniform of a regimental sergeant-major of the WELSH GUARDS, with a red tunic, black trousers, bearskin, and sword.

In this traditional ceremony the WELSH GUARDS paid their respects to the city of Brussels, which they entered on September 3 last year after a 97-mile advance in 14 hours.

Major-General ADAIR, commander of the Division, unveiled the statue. A detachment of 306 men of the 1st and 2nd Battalions, WELSH GUARDS, was drawn up in the narrow street leading on to the corner where the "manneken" has stood for 300 years and then marched past General ADAIR and M. Van de Meulebroeck, Burgomaster of Brussels.

Until sunset the "manneken" remains in uniform, with a Guardsman standing on either side of him. To-night the uniform joins the 30 others suits comprising the "manneken's" wardrobe, and will be brought out only on special occasions.

From The Times, Aug 20, 1940:

    A MIMIC BATTLE
THE KING WITH A BREN GUN

    VISIT TO GUARDS

The King watched a battalion of the WELSH GUARDS stage a realistic mimic battle in a south-eastern county yesterday. They were using live ammunitions, and bombs from 2in. mortars hurtled overhead as the King and a party of Staff officers stood on a hilltop watching the scene, The King, with Lieutenant-General Sir Bertram Sergison-Brooke, G.O.C. the London area, watched machine-gun bullets sending up clouds of dust as they struck a distant hillside.

A young Guards officer explained the scheme of operations, and gave a running commentary on the "battle." In front of the King were WELSH GUARDS in battle dress squatting on the hillside, many of them veterans of Boulogne, studying methods of counter-attack. An "enemy" tank came into the battle zone. A platoon advanced to deal with it with Molotoff cocktails, and the King watched them hurl the bottles at a wrecked car which represented the tank. Within a minute or two the car was blazing furiously, and the tank was out of action.

Earlier in the day the King saw a training battalion of WELSH GUARDS, and commented on the smartness of the turn-out of recruits with only five weeks' training. He watched the men being taught how to deal with low-flying bombing attacks. As a Wellington bomber came diving over the camp the King handled a Bren gun, following the aeroplane with it as it circled round and swooped over the heads of the troops, who were "firing" at it with their rifles.

The King saw two men being taught the use of Tommy guns, and asked about their value in modern warfare. He also chatted to four girls of the A.T.S. who, in white overalls, were cooking the men's midday meals at open-air ovens.

At brigade headquarters the King took the salute at a march-past of the IRISH GUARDS. Afterwards the battalion climbed into motor-coaches and drove past the King, followed by their mechanical transport sections.

From The Times, Saturday, April 01, 1944:

    BRITISH UNITS IN ITALY

    WELSH GUARDS AND COUNTY REGIMENTS

It is officially announced that the WELSH GUARDS have been fighting with the Fifth Army in Italy. Their formation came into the line in the second week in February in the centre of the Fifth Army front, and engaged in action in the Castelforte area. Here they have helped to keep at bay enemy attempts to push our troops back to the eastern bank of the Garigliano. The WELSH GUARDS have previously fought with distinction in Tunisia, and in France and Flanders.

The King's Shropshire Light Infantry have been fighting in the Anzio beachhead, and were among the troops who led the way forward up the Anzio-Albano Road. When the Campo Leone salient was abandoned the K.S.L.I. took their place in a line covering Carroceto. Here they helped to stop the second enemy drive against our positions, and a third attack backed with Tiger tanks. This attack was duly crushed and our line maintained against odds.

The Leicestershire Regiment and The Highland Light Infantry are also announced as serving in the Mediterranean theatre.

The Irish Brigade landed at Termoli, on the east coast of Italy, in the first week of October, and has since been in the thick of the fighting in which Eighth Army has been engaged.

From The Times, July 6, 1944:

    WELSH GUARDS IN ITALY

An official announcement says that the WELSH GUARDS played an important part in General ALEXANDER's offensive of May 12. The regiment was in action on a sector of the Italian front in which it, not only had to crush a series of obstinate enemy rearguards, but had also to penetrate difficult country in which the Germans had made the best possible use of demolitions. During the last week of May it assisted in the capture of several mountainous features which were of the greatest tactical importance.

In June the regiment fought a series of actions against rearguards in its advance along one of the important roads running north through Rome, and pursued the enemy across the hills west of Alatri.

From The Times, Jun 11, 1945:

    GUARDS ARMOURED DIVISION
    FAREWELL PARADE

ROTENBURG, June 10.- Field-Marshal MONTGOMERY told a "farewell to armour" parade at Rotenburg yesterday that Germany lost the war through three mistakes:- (1)Going to war with Russia; (2) drawing the United States into the war; (3) fighting the battle of Germany west of the Rhine.

In brilliant sunshine Field-Marshall MONTGOMERY drove to inspect the parade of infantry units of the Guards Armoured Division, including Guards Armoured Brigade, Household Cavalry Regiment, Royal Artillery Regiments, Royal Signals, and armoured WELSH GUARDS. He told them:-

"It is the King's request that the Guards should revert to an infantry division again. You have done marvellous work under your leader, Major-General Allan Adair, who has led you through your brilliant campaigns. In my experience the Guards Armoured Division, which was formed in the summer of 1941 as a direct result of the expected German invasion, is one of the best armoured divisions."

Units of the Guards Armoured Division who have been with it since the beginning, included the Leicestershire Yeomanry and the 21st Anti-Tank Regiment, are now leaving. The Guards Armoured Division landed in France last June and took part in the sensational advance through Belgium and Holland completing the most rapid advance made by any division in history - from Douai to Brussels, 97 miles in 14 hours.

After the Colours had been blessed by the Chaplain-General to the Forces (the Reverend C.D. Symons) the King stepped down from the dais and presented them. He then addressed the Battalion.

    June 17, 1947:

I thought I'd post this up as I recall some queries a few years ago why there was only a Dec 1944 diary. I can confirm this is a National Archives typo. The 1944 diary covers Jan to Dec 1944

    Cheers
