I have bought this photograph of a RAF aircrew member standing in front of a Wellington 1A with the serial number L7774. This aircraft seems to have crashed on the 6th July 1942 at Wingland, Lincolnshire after an engine caught fire and the crew elected to make an emergency landing. I am trying to trace who the crew were and have a list of 10 probables who are listed as dying on the 6th July 1942 and who are buried in England. None have a Squadron listed against their name. One internet report lists them as being CGS (Central Gliding School? unlikely I know). Can anyone please tell me if CGS means something else in a war time context? Can we identify the squadron from the visible letter code? Lastly, the airman seems to be a fair bit older than the average air for aircrew. Any thoughts on who he might be? Thank you.
Central Gunnery School No fatalities but 3 injured. The attached is the Form 1180 Accident Card - Copyright RAF Museum. Regards Ross
Ross, thank you for posting the accident card; it is appreciated. Could the man in my photograph be a flying or gunnery instructor? The squadron code KU seems to have been used by 53 Operational Training Unit, 47 Squadron RAF and 265 Squadron RAF. If it is KO then it would represent 115 Squadron. Simon
