All, can anyone tell me the farthest-north target that Wellingtons flying from Malta ever bombed in mainland Italy?
A quick search in "Malta and British Strategic Policy 1925-1943" by Douglas Austin has 148 Squadron flying bombing missions to Taranto, Brindisi and Bari in December 1940 (p98). So it looks like Bari might be your best bet. I'll look further to see if I find anything better. Looked through my copy of "Bombers over Sand and Snow 205 Group in World War Two" by Alun Granfield and there's a lot of information on bomber action out of Malta. He includes a chart of operations carried out by Wellingtons from Malta from Oct 31st 1940 to Feb 28 1941 (p34) which seems to verify that Bari was the furthest north they went with Naples running second.
I don't know about Malta, but I am quite experienced concerning Wellington bombing operations from Tunisia, above all during October-November, 1943. If needed...
Orwell, thanks - I thought they got further north than that in 1940, parhaps not... Varasc - the same question then lol - what was the furthest north on mainland Italy raids by Wellington from Tunisia reached?
