Looking forward to seeing this myself as I kinda know Hogie (albeit mostly online) but the movie does take some liberties with the truth, for a start the three guys who beat the crap out of Hogie were not Neo-Nazi's (I believe one of them was either Mexican or Chinese and another had German ancestry, as does Hogie) and Hogie had been drinking with them for quite a bit of the evening before hand. I believe it was the revelation that Hogie was a Cross-dresser that made things go south so fast and resulted in Hogie being beaten so bad that he nearly died. This is one of these stories that is slightly too complex for Hollywood to be able to sell to US Mid-West audiences that they either have to distort the truth or schmaltz the crap out of it to make it play well! It will be interesting to see what kind of 'happy-upbeat-ending' that Hollywood has applied to it.
Yes there is a bit of Hollywood slightly changing things but all movies do that. I ordered the original documentery via the link of the official Marwencol website. That came other day but not watched it yet. I'm also waiting for the book to come next week.
The Documentary is pretty good and covers a lot of the complexity of Hogie's backstory something the Movie won't/can't touch. Anyway, will keep an open mind until I've seen it for myself.
