Hi, I have a group of medals to Cpl of the Welch Regt and am trying to identify what Battalion is was in.

I am lucky enough to have his certificate of service which shows

    Home 5/12/36 - 6/1/38
    India 7/1/38 - 18/3/44
    Home 19/3/44 - 17/7/44
    NWE 18/7/44 - 14/8/45
    Home 5/8/45 - 5/5/46

Am particularly interested in what Bn in might have been in during his time in North West Europe. Wondering if anyone can identify this from the date or arrival.

    Many Thanks.

If he was with the Welch Regiment in India then he was in the 2nd battalion. Possibly he returned to home in 1944 due repatriation.

Thanks, I wonder if he continued with that Bn or transferred later in the war.

Seems that he leaved battalion before it was transferred to Burma later during 1944. 2nd Welch was part of 19th Indian Division. He was in India for 6 years so as I said he was possible returned to UK due repatriation like many others at that time.

Thanks, I guess it could be hard to pin point his Bn in France. He could well have arrived as part of extra drafts or reinforcements several weeks after the bulk of his Bn arrived.

NWE, would that be North West Europe? Would repatriation be the same as Time-Ex, Time Expired? It was 3 & 8, 3 years and 8 months around middle of 1946 in India for individuals, not for Battalions, as drafts are added from time to time.
