Hi, I am doing a report on the battle of Iwo Jima for my world history class. I searched on google, etc. and can't seem to find a list of weapons used in the battle of Iwo Jima(ex. planes, guns, tanks, etc. on both sides). If someone could give me a list or anything of the sort I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I can give you some of the weapon used by the Americans. M1 Carbine, M1 Garand, Thompson SMG, M1911 Colt 45, bazooka, Flame thrower, I think they also used the M60 machine gun.
The japanese used the Arisaka rifle,

...only for perimeter defences and training on the firing ranges during the 1960's!!! :D

(The equivalents would be the .30-06 and .5in Browning medium and heavy machine guns (the M1919?) ). The Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) would also have been used. US snipers were also possibly issued with the trusty old Springfield 1903.

One last thing, what are the dimensions of the island? I think it's like 5 miles long and 2 miles wide or something like that but I'm not sure.
And did the U.S. use tanks in Iwo Jima? Thanks.

The Japanese used the Chi Hag (I think that's the spelling) tank and the Americans did use tanks on Iwo Jima as I've seen them being unloaded fromtheir supply ship on to the island.

Did the U.S. use B-24 or B-29 bombers DURING Iwo Jima? I know they were used against Japan after Iwo Jima but I think they used B-24 bombers during the battle.

I did a very deep research about Iwo-Jima last year and I'll try to post the article I made as soon as possible.

The Americans did use many tanks in Iwo-Jima, but most of them were equipped with flame throwers instead of 75mm guns, since it was more effective in destroying Japanese MG nests and underground positions.

The Japanese also had some tanks in the island, as well as light and medium artillery, mortars, hand grenades, a lot of machine guns, etc.

If you are truly writing a paper that is to be graded by someone who knows history, then do research.....
Forum replies such as the likes that you have recieved are not always factual and will lead nowhere.
For a book on armor, I suggest 'Marine tanks battles in the Pacific' by Gilbert. This does detail American Armor, most of which were not flamers.
The japanese did have a tank named the 'Chi Ha'....
    The m-60 is not a WW2 weapon.
As to airpower, I recommend 'Fire in the Sky' by Eric Bergerud. It details both sides, I do not think you will find a better book on the subject.

This is apparently a modern production patch. Its source appears to be a Japanese language flight simulator players group website.

It is most assuredly NOT an issue US military patch.

As far as a patch given to Japanese veterans of the battle, remember that any such survivors would have been taken prisoner by the Americans. Former POWs were not, and still are not, held in particularly high regard in the Japanese culture. I seriously doubt it is some sort of Japanese former Iwo Jima POW remembrance patch.

I'd suggest that it is just a 'play' patch.

I agree that if you're writing a paper you need to stick to published works or official government documents published on the web.

Blue88 recommends Bergerud's Fire in the Sky, an excellent work, but for USN activities you might want to check out Clark Reynolds "The Fast Carriers".

If you really must use the internet, don't get the aswers to your research questions from a forum, while some of the info might be pretty good, some of it will be tainted by urban legends, misunderstandings, and opinion.

A google search on Iwo Jima will get you about 151,000 hits. Try looking at official site, such as the Naval Historical Center (http://www.history.navy.mil). That site has 942 hits of its own.

Remember to give credit where due and good luck.

    Regards

    Rich

Very true. Also, with some exceptions, you have to be careful with Internet sites, many of which are just the personal creations of people who may or may not know what they are talking about.

University and museum sites and some others, such as the BBC, are generally reliable.
