I am looking for reliable information on wartime £GB/$US exchange rates. Can anyone point me to a good source please?

I would suggest you send off an email to a number of the larger Merchant bank companies in the UK (from the daily paper) and pose the question.

One of them may have the historical data available.

    ALSO:

    Bank of England.

    Barklays

    Lloyd's

    Midland

    Nat West

    British Banker's Association

    Good Luck.

    Angie,

It might also be worth E-Mailing the Bank of England. They gave me very useful information on the value of the pound in relation to today purchasing power for each year going back to 1887. I know it's not quite what you want but I'll be surprised if they cannot provide Second World War exchange rates against the US$. The address to E-Mail is: enquiries@bankofengland.co.uk.

The uk stats office have also proven very valuable in the past as well as the monetary policy office in the Bank of England
