Dresden - gives an interesting, if frightening depiction based on the RAF raid from a German perspective.

Whilst watching TV remembered for no apparent reason, a war film i saw when i was a kid. I believe it was called 'appointment with Venus'

‘Venus’ being a price cow that was trapped on the channel Irelands during Nazi occupation and had to be rescued.

The only thing i can really remember about the film was the navy's need for establishing the displacement of a cow so they could purpose build a landing craft!

The story is based on a novel which is reputedly based on some element of fact!

Has anyone seen this film recently, is it worth getting hold of? It stars David Niven so cant be that bad, can it?

    Battleground

My dad told us that this was a pretty good depiction of what it was like for American small units in the winter of 44/45

    Battleground (1949) - IMDb

I never looked at the IMDB entry for it before today and was happily surprised to see that a lot of the reviewers agreed with my dad.

    Here is a typical one:

Most underatted and forgotten movie of WW2 ever..., 18 January 2005
    [IMG]
    Author: acerimmer308 from United States
Before "Band of Brothers" came out, I considered this the best, most accurate depiction of an infantry unit in action ever, and I still think it has an edge over "Saving Private Ryan" and "Patton" as the greatest World War II movie(not mini-series) yet made.

The entire cast is not only fun to watch, but very believable in their individual roles, and as a veteran, I can attest to the fact that the swings between humor and deep thoughts in their conversations are dead on accurate. Anybody who's ever served in an infantry unit will tell you that for all the bickering back and forth, members of a squad, platoon, or company will always look out for each other. "Battleground" captures this perfectly.

One of the saddest things for me about this movie is how few people know of it. Except for the occasional airing on AMC or TCM, it rarely shows up on TV and that's a shame. It's well worth the time and effort to find this one.

Funnily enough, I reckon I have watched this on Foxtel 3 times in the past year.

Great movie based on historic events and true to those so I have heard. Some of the other Battle of the Bulge movies were hollywoodish (Sorry Henry) however I would still watch both.

A Bridge too Far - I love that film. Between the glider landings, the Shermans in XXX corp, and cast of actors it is just a great film. Hollywood capturing the American energy and the British stoicism. . .like when Anthony Hopkins finds out that he isn't getting relief, "Well, it was good to hear from you."

Patton - Although disappointed that the tanks were inaccurate during the film, I think it was on purpose (All the tanks in the Movie were Patton Tanks.)

    Fictional.
Saving Private Ryan - Say what you will about the plot and story. Nobody is better at capturing the imagery of 1944 Wartime France than Spielberg. Every set/scene had a very distinct look, feel, and sound that even films that were made right after war just couldn't achieve. Like the rumble of the tanks, or that "pop" of carbines.

And it's not showing this year ! There is only five war films on over the 2 weeks of Christmas this year and the best of them appears to be Guns of Navarone
