Paterson Clarence Hughes - Sutton St James Churchyard. Paterson Clarence Hughes DFC (September 19, 1917 – September 7, 1940), was a Royal Australian Air Force fighter pilot, assigned to the Royal Air Force during the Battle of Britain in World War II. The top-scoring Australian flying ace of the Battle of Britain and one of the 24 Australians who lost their lives during the battle, Hughes has been described as the "real driving force behind No. 234 Squadron RAF." Paterson Clarence Hughes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A COOMA born and bred digger, who died almost 70 years ago when his spitfire aeroplane crashed in England, will be honoured at a memorial service on the weekend in the UK. (23/08/08) Flight Lieutenant Paterson Clarence Hughes, born in Cooma on September 19, 1917, is regarded as a World War II hero, being posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Flt. Lt. Hughes died 12 days prior to his 23rd birthday, on September 7, 1940, following the first mass daylight raid on London by the German Luftwaffe. His plane crashed after leading a squadron of Supermarine Spitfires to intercept and engage with 350 enemy bombers and more than 600 escorting fighters escaping to France following the raid. Flt. Lt. Hughes will be recognised for his efforts at the Shoreham Aircraft Museum, Kent, which will hold a Thanksgiving and Dedication of Stone ceremony on Saturday. (23/08/08)
Drew I am seeing a friend of mine tomorrow who has got some from Leeds but I dont know which yet. I will up date the relevant page when I get them back Capt Bill Yes ! (lol) and also on the Yorkshire (2) thread. Perhaps I should have put them all on here in the first place! Thanks to you both for the offers Andy
Hull Western - Quait RE Haltemprice - Heron RE (family plot) Hull North - Keenan AAC I could not find this one. Lots of damage done to cemeteries in Hull due to the flooding (deep excavation work ongoing in Hull North). He should be here Most headstones have comp and plot number on back - but lots (and I mean LOTS) apear to be in the wrong place. Will enquire during working hours with ground staff
Capt Bill Thanks for those, I know the frustration when one can't find the headstone when its meant to be there. It could be that his relatives did not want a CWGC headstone Andy
Have another lad in Harrogate, Stonefall Cemetery [in addition to the chap earlier in the thread] for someone to look for when in that part of the world. Walker, Donald Cameron F/O RCAF, December 2/43, Section C, Row F, Grave 12 Thanks much. cheers, phil
