Now I have finally got my act together I would be grateful if anyone could assist with providing pictures of headstones from the following cemeteries.A couple of general views of the cemetery/churchyard would also be appreciated.

I have Mason already. If you send me a message with your email address I will email it to you.

The other one, Weston, I could not find when I visited the cemetery a couple of years ago. This is not uncommon as I am sure you will understand. The passage of time, family moved away etc etc.

    Regards

These are both CGWC commemorations and should be next to each other (Plot C Row 2 Grave 1 & 2), unless the cemetery layout is strange! Perhaps Weston has a private headstone, which may not have any military reference on it? However If Weston's grave marker is not there, CWGC should be informed.

There are very many private graves that have been lost.

The grass grows, the headstone sinks or the grave boundary disappears.

Are you really saying that for EVERY private grave marker we/I can't find that the CWGC should be informed. What about the WW1 private grave markers? Over 90 years ago.

The fact that the CWGC has recorded the place of burial surely does not mean that they are responsible for the grave. Families could opt for a private burial; it is up to them to keep it up.

I don't like it any more than I am sure we all don't.

To get back to my original reply to Andy's posting, I am at a loss to understand his silence in response to my offer to let him have a copy of the grave marker because I know that he has read my messages.

    Martin,

Perhaps this might explain. His stats show last activity 16/8

    Oops!

    Thanks Diane.

He must be reading his private messages on his hols! Such dedication!

Anyway, I hope that he is enjoying himself in Turkey.

    Martin,

You are correct the family or grave owner is responsible for the upkeep of graves and private markers, but if the headstone or marker of a CWGC commemorated grave is lost or unreadable I believe CWGC are keen to try and correct this. I believe they need permission from the owners and I'm sure they would be interested in being informed if it is lost.
It may also be that the references given are wrong. Plot/row/grave does not seem likely for this churchyard (the others burials are just given a vague location) and these two burials are not together and you were hence not able to find it. Did you specifically look for this grave, or just locate all the CWGC pattern stones? I know private graves are a devil to find without a cemetery plan.

I specifically looked for the grave but could not find it.

There must be very many scores, if not hundreds, of private WW1/WW2 graves that have disappeared in the UK.

For example, in Brecon St David's, of the 8 listed graves I could only find 4 and in Kington 4 are missing out of 12. On the other hand we find a lot of other memorials, for example private ones to family members buried elsewhere, in Kington, again, there were 2.

Also, though this is outside the scope of this Forum, we find a lot of non WW1/WW2, for example in Hereford St Martin's I found 47 2 SAS Regiment MOD grave markers dating from 1967-2002.
