My ambulance partner from work is going to Pakistan in November for 4 weeks to see his family and he has kindly offered to take pictures of any war graves (assuming there are some) in the following areas and towns that he is visiting relatives:

    Mirpur - Azad Kashmir.

    Islamabad

    Kirachi

    Kutli

    Gulaar

    Mangla

    Jahelum

And anywhere in between them as he is travelling from place to place listed.

    Cheers
    Andy

    Hi Andy,

I have photographs of the headstsones all the North Irish Horse WW I casualties except for two, one being
Lieutenant L.C.Charles Wise who is buried in Rawalpindi War Cemetery. The grave reference is 4. A. 6.

If your partner is able to visit the cemetery I, and my NIH colleagues, will be most grateful.

    From CWGC records, http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=909759

"Rawalpindi War Cemetery, situated in the cantonment area, can be reached by taxi from Islamabad Airport or from any hotel in the capital city. It is part of the Protestant Cemetery known as Gorah Qabrastaan (The Foreign Cemetery). The nearest landmark is the Combined Military Hospital (C.M.H). A taxi driver would take a visitor to the Old Cemetery entrance because it is not possible to enter the War Cemetery from the Civil Cemetery. One should ask to be taken to the rear corner of the Cemetery where the War Cemetery entrance is situated. The War Cemetery occupies a triangle shaped corner of the main cemetery, but is fenced off from it. A taxi driver should be asked to take one to Gorah Qabrastaan in Lalkurti. There are no C.W.G.C. direction signs to this Cemetery."

    Karachi War Cemetery Directions

The cemetery is a few miles from the centre of Karachi, to the north-east on National Stadium Road and can be reached by taxi. It is now surrounded by the naval colony and is adjacent to the new naval cemetery. The easiest way to reach the War Cemetery from the city centre is to go to the National Stadium and follow the road leading to Dalmia in which the airport is situated. From the airport follow the reverse road from Dalmia to the National Stadium and the Cemetery is situated to the left hand side of National Stadium Road. Owing to constant problems the direction signs have been removed but attempts will be made at resiting them.
    Cheers

Can I rephrase him as a work colleague? Partner makes it sound like we are married and although some at work may think that is a distinct possibility we are just very good friends that work well together.

Ps Keep em coming-I can't wait to see his face when I give him the list

Just to confirm these are the only two CWGC Cemeteries in Pakistan?

He travels early next month so I'm sorting this all out for him this week. I've decided the best thing for him to do is just photograph the whole lot although sadly for some reason Karachi looks a non-starter. I'll have to offer him an extra Bavarian Slice this week as a bribe.

    I'll keep you posted :)

If your partner's got room for one more I'd be massively grateful: one of the men on my hometown war memorial I'm researching:

    Major Richard STANLEY- BAKER
Burma MT died India 13/11/18 Indian Army Reserve of Officers attached to Supply and Transport Corps p.273
    3rd Burma M.T. Coy

    Aged 36
The husband of Irene Stanley-Baker of Four Winds, Westward Ho!, Devon
    Rawalpindi War Cemetery, Pakistan
    2.G.3

Thanks a lot - no worries if you're full up.

    Simon

Details of this officer below for the interested

    Major Richard STANLEY- BAKER

Burma MT Indian Army Reserve of Officers attached to 3rd Burma Motor Transport Company,
    Supply and Transport Corps

Died in India 13th November 1918

Richard Stanley-Baker is the only man listed on the St. Anne’s memorial to die on active service in India. While the British Empire was at war with Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire, forces were maintained in India to safeguard the Raj against the actions of hostile tribes on the North-West frontier.

Richard Stanley-Baker was born in Birmingham on the 9th of February 1882. he was the son of George Baker, a former Lord Mayor of Birmingham in 1876. George Baker was born in 1825 into a successful Quaker family, and he his move to Bewdley in the late1870s was part of his aim to support the ideals of the Victorian art critic and social theorist John Ruskin. Beaucastle, the home of the Bakers was built in the latest neo-gothic style and was the home of the Baker family in Bewdley.

Richard was educated at King Edward’s School, Birmingham, and in the 1901 census, he is resident at Dalton Hall in Manchester, a hall of residence for Owens College, Manchester, where Stanley-Baker was a student between 1899-1902. He graduated in 1902 with a B.A. (Hons) Engineering Class II. He also took a M.Sc. from the University of Manchester in 1905 (which Owens had become in 1903).

George Baker died in 1910, and by 1911 Beaucastle was the home of Francis Frederick Simpson, an iron producer. In 1912, Richard Stanley-Baker married his daughter, Irene Grace Simpson on the 25th September 1912 at the parish church, Ribbesford. By this time his profession was a civil engineer.

Richard Stanley Baker died in November 1918 and was buried at Rawalpindi War Cemetery (in modern day Pakistan) in grave 2.G.3. He was 36 years old. By the early 1920s, his widow was living in Westward Ho!, Devon.

I was in Rawalpindi War Cemetery yesterday (2/4/11) and noticed some previous posting or requests for photos of Aussie memorials - is this still required as I noticed someone offered to do this late last year.

    Please advise

    Cheers
