War Diary of 652 AOP Squadron - June 1944 (Normandy)

    Here is a link to the above unit. Interesting to see how the AOP observers linked with other units to coordinate shoots against enemy targets. 426 sorties were flown with 244 shoots being undertaken.

    The other point of note is that following the shooting down of and fatal wounding of Capt Pugh on the 9th June, urgent permission was sought to remove the stripes (painted on all allied aircraft) painted on the Austers. As they were so slow, they were more easily spotted by enemy aircraft. On the 10th June, the stripes were removed and they reverted to a camoflaged canopy.
