I can't remember why, but about 5 years ago I copied this war diary (WO166/15710) and have just got round to transcribing it - it is interesting to see how many RASC units were being created in early 1944.

Commandant and DAQMG attended conference at AG8 when details of units to be formed during Jan and Feb 44 were given. Information was also given as to units likely to move out during the same period. This was the first time that this Centre has been advised in advance of planning in respect of units. If this procedure could be adopted as a general policy, it would be of great assistance for Mob Centres in planning allocation of accommodation.

    5 January 1944 MIRFIELD
Attended meeting at War Office on 4 Jan 44 on the question of accommodation within Centres and the juggling of units in output and intake, so as to meet the demands in accommodation for freshly forming units. We were able to compete with the demands on our accommodation, provided 21 Army Group removed mobilised units of theirs in sufficient time. Apparently, 21 Army Group are having difficulty in getting accommodation around the country. The meeting certainly cleared the air in regard to our relations with 21 Army Group and in relation to AG8. It now transpires that 21 Army Group are allowed to issue orders to us regarding their units with a copy to AG8. 21 Army Group can also write to any of their units provided they send a copy to us. This is a war-time improvisation and irregularity and I don’t wholly agree with it, because it is likely to lead to complications if we both issue instructions to the same units at the same time, unaware that the other is doing so. The position for that reason is not altogether easy. The point is this, however, that one must realise that 21 Army Group have just about as much as they can get on with and we are in a position to help them, rather than hinder, and must do so, whether it inconveniences us or not.
    Field Trg of RASC Units.
More moves of Cs. RASC have necessitated the training being handed over to another one – C.RASC 33 L of C Tpt Coln – and no sooner than that had been done than the 2nd-in-command who apparently, so far as I can make out, did most of the trg (not Col FOULKES) has not been moved to a staff appointment, which is another jar. The state of affairs is likely to continue, because there is no hope now of us getting any increase in establishment for this Mob Centre. We are still expected to go on trg but it really is becoming a question of making bricks without straw.

Representative for War Office ST3(b), (Captain MAY), visited Karrier Works, Huddersfield, in connection with the use of these premises for de-boxing and assembly of American vehs. He expressed satisfaction at the progress now being made in conversion of the premises and confidence in the practicability of the scheme being carried out.
Before returning to War Office he made contact with CRE. West Riding District to discuss proposed modification of crane arrangements.
De-Boxing and Assembly of American Vehs.
At a recent visit to War Office, Brigadier WITT informed me that he would get Col. DRURY to come up and see for himself what is going on in this question. Col DRURY told me that he was coming up.
On Friday, 8 Jan 44, we got notification that Captain May was coming up. His last visit was in Oct 43. I think Captain MAY came up mainly with the idea of seeing whether a Tank Tptr was a suitable vehicle for delivering the cases, as War Office had arranged for a Tank Tptr to be there all loaded with the case. The Tank Tptr was there all right, but the case on it was the wrong size and much smaller than the cases which we have to expect.
The result was that a considerable amount of measurement and guess-work had to be relied on.
It was, however, found that owing to the height of the tptr and the height of the case, the 10-ton crane already provided, came so low to the ground that it was quite useless.
The CRE. was approached to see whether he could get two 5-ton cranes instead of one 10-ton. The CRE. was most helpful. He said that he would set about doing what he could at once, but I am very doubtful whether we shall know that 5-tons are satisfactory until we have actually tried them. It seems rather a pity that we did not know what type of vehicle was to deliver the cases before we ever asked for a 10-ton as opposed to two 5-tons.
The second door which the certain officers were so insistent was absolutely necessary and which I asked for upon such recommendation, although I was definitely against going so [to?] such an expense, has now been found unnecessary. However, I am not going to find it is unnecessary until I have seen the show working. I have asked for this second door and I still think it may be necessary if the output has to be increased or can be increased.
My original output was based on 4 lorries per day and I shall be very surprised whether we can increase that output whether we have a second door or not.
Unfortunately everybody in this show, both my advisors and myself, all seem to be very much amateurs.
I understand from Captain MAY that his branch are rather feeling that we are trying to make a shadow factory out of this uncasing.

1647 FBE Pl RASC (147 Bridge Coy RASC) left this Centre for HULL to join parent unit (Authy: NORCO SD 2877 dtd 10 Jan 44).
The maintenance of vehs of small units (forming and mobilising) which have no wksps of their own is becoming a problem.
We are now getting a considerable number of these units instead of large units with wksps. Units with wksps could undertake the maintenance of more vehs than their own establishment and so help the smaller units. As it is now, we are faced with maintenance – luckily we have 3 wksps lorries in the Centre and by using the wksp personnel with cadre GT coys we can cope with the situation since most of the vehicles are new and inspections are the main work required on them.

FORMATION OF NEW UNITS. 23 new units have recently been formed in the Centre and, arising from observation of initial difficulties, it should be recorded that some definite plan must be followed in posting in personnel for new units. Endless confusion arises through posting in officers and rank and file before senior NCOs arrive and before accommodation is properly taken over. The first postings should be in the nature of an advance party so that accommodation can be taken over by them. This party should consist of:
    1 Captain.
1 CQMS (or qualified Admin Cpl in case of Arty Pl).
    1 Sjt.
    1 Cpl.
    15 Drivers or Ptes.
Mob Centre would then advise War Office and OIC Records on what date further postings can be made.
Adoption of this plan would also facilitate issue of formation instructions, reception of personnel, initial documentation, etc, and would give the unit an orderly start.
In other words, a standard cadre for new units should be evolved at an early stage of mobilisation planning.

The first two cases of American vehs arrived at Huddersfield and the projects of the RASC assembling vehs on behalf of the Ministry of Supply commenced.
We had been led to believe and expected to receive 10-ton or 6-ton MACKS with chassis, complete with axles and cabs and we had equipped ourselves with the necessary lifting and shifting tackle to meet that contingency. Also, we were disappointed, because the vehs we received were 6-ton MACKS but their parts came in three cases – chassis, axles and cabs all separate, to say nothing of bodies. Difficulties faced us at once – not unsurmountable difficulties but just annoying difficulties which could have been avoided if we had only known what we were going to receive. The result has been delay, due of course to the fact that we had not enough lifting tackle or shifting tackle. Nor have we got sufficient tools of the sizes made necessary by having to fit axles to chassis. It is all very annoying and disappointing, because we had hoped to get right into our stride almost immediately. The men are all keyed up and excellent but no amount of enthusiasm will enable a man to properly tighten up a 3-in nut with a shifting spanner. Again, at the present time we only have on travelling crane (capable of taking 3-tons) and that is fully occupied with heavier work, without being available for uneconomical use in lifting back axles, weighing 1-ton or 30-cwts, from the uncasing site up to the shops to the assembly site. A block and tackle of necessary capacity and a truck capable of carrying 1-ton would suffice.
Again, the travelling crane cannot be spared for holding up a chassis while a back axle is being run in underneath it and fitted to it.
A block and tackle for this particular purpose is all that is required.
The trouble is we have not got these blocks and tackle or trolleys so we have to carry on as best we can until we get them. To get them we are dependent on ST3 War Office.
I was over at GOOLE on Friday last to see the M of S uncasing dump where the L.E.P. Transport Coy is assembling vehs. They have everything from electric cranes to electic trucks which all help to make work very easy. The Manager was most helpful and is quite prepared to help us wherever he can, not only with advice but with tools if we can’t get our own.

I received masses of indents on G 1058 for material, tools and equipment for Huddersfield, signed by Lt. CROMPTON, with covering letter signed by Major TERRACE, OIC Wksps. I previously told them to send in a list of any special tools or equipment they wanted as I should get these through the War Office by making application. Material, I want them to get through the wksps at Ossett, where machinery already exists for indenting and accounting. This assembly cannot require much material or much equipment other than special equipment and special tools anyway, in so much that Ossett cannot compete with it, in my opinion. We help ourselves locally and overcome minor difficulties without duplication or creating a mass of office work at Huddersfield. I want the Wksp Offr of 707 Coy out in the shops, not sitting in his office wrapped in accounting and correspondence. Moreover, 707 Coy has not machinery for doing it.

  17. I am that guy, Tom asked me whas it a tank Transporters Coy? Yes,They where. Cpl J. Sinton who wrotes " The Long Trailers" (the History and travels of the 143 Coy) toltd us that :"An advance party moved to Enfield where Company Headquarters were toestablished., and a few days later the Company, with the exeption of B Platoon, who had been selected for the Newport job, moved to a new location.
The job of the unit was chiefly the lifting of tanks from the docks to Amoured Vehicle Parks, Ordnance Depots, and later taking the same tanks to the ports or to assembly areas prior to the invation.......
Recalled from Newport "B Platoon" and a complete Workshops section moved from Enfield on 13th September 1944, to load L.V.T.s for the continent, and were followed by the remainder of the company on the 15th September
    that's why Enfield so importent

    Hi Johan,
Thanks and some very interesting info there.
I think it would be a good idea to start a thread of it's own (143 Coy RASC)and if you add those lovely photos from the other website,i suspect this would help and draw in a bigger audience to your advantage.

    best...........Graham.

Does anyone have any war diaries for 17Coy that they would be kind enough to share
    Thank you
