I found the following entry in the War Diary for the Calgary Highlanders for May 1940. The battalion had just arrived at Shilo Camp, Manitoba, where the 6th Canadian Infantry Brigade was concentrating.

It was issued by the National Defence Headquarters and gave some excellent general directions on the keeping of war diaries. I only wish that more units had paid attention to these details more carefully.

For most the war diary was a chore and was done when the person was tired and/or stressed from battle. I too wish that more care was devoted to them.
