    Appendix “J” dated 27 Mar 1945
Notes arising from Conference attended by CRASC
held by ADST (T) at Second Army (Rear)
    27 Mar 1945

    1. The future plan was briefly outlined as follows:

The pursuit of the enemy to be undertaken by two Corps consisting of one Armd and one Inf, with a vague possibility of a third Corps coming into the picture as well. But it is anticipated that only two Corps can be employed because of the available resources of Army Tpt and Tpt Colns.

    2. Second Army HQ staff decided that in the future advance there will be no “cushions” but the operational Corps will have Tpt Colns and Tpt allotted to them for filling their FMCs from 10 Army RH, which will remain reasonably static in its present area for some considerable time.

    3. Consequent on the future plan being implemented, 46 Tpt Coln would hand over its “Q” Details role to an Army Gp Coln which is moving into this area in the immediate future to understudy and be in a position to take over our duties at short notice, enabling 46 Tpt Coln to move across the two rivers and take up its duties without any delay. It is hoped that the two HAR coys at least will remain with this Coln as basic tpt and it was decided that unless it was essential, DOMINION trailers would not be used as 3rd line Corps tpt.

    4. Disposition of other Army Tpt Colns as follows:

22 Tpt Coln to take over control of all railheads between the MAAS and the RHINE.

44 Tpt Coln to close down in the NEERPELT area less small det at HELMOND to tidy up various stations and dumps thus making them available for third line duties with the Corps.

45 Tpt Coln will participate in stocking 10 ARH, but be available to leap-frog and open a new control pt when Tn can run trains fwd into Germany: but it is anticipated the railhead railtail party may be on the go.

    5. DDST and Ord saw the EAGLE trailers: decided they were useless for Army Tpt work and authority will follow from ST Second Army to return these trailers to Army Gp for use as local tpt in the ANTWERP area.

    6. ST Second Army are asking 21 Army Gp for the fourth Pl of Domn trls when they are delivered in this theatre.

    7. 46 Tpt Coln to liaise with 44 Tpt Coln to take over “Q” Details value 16 x 3-ton from 279 Coy under comd 44 Tpt Coln. Second Army signal ST11T of 271200A refers.

    8. Ref one pl 844 Coy now employed moving sups and civil labour in HELMOND area: final lift of sups 28th. On 29th this Pl will assist 24 (Br) Coln to load RE trains at HELMOND and thus the problem arising from the Sup details in the collection of civilian labour would be automatically solved.

    9. The HEERLEN mine detail is being reviewed with a view to the commitment being undertaken by the US Army.

    10. At present 31 Tpt Coln is the HQ which will probably relieve 46 of their “Q” Details commitment, but the Corps plot is implemented.

    11. In general, full preparation has been made for the Coln HQ to be in a psn to become operational as a Corps 3rd line tpt coln. Suitable tpt boards, codes – especially GARPLAYTIME – will be brushed up and the Coln in general will be in a position to operate without accn should this be necessary. Load tables will be given especial attention and all offrs must be in possession of up-to-date load tables applicable to types of vehs we may have to operate – which will be 3-ton, 4-ton, 5-ton, 6-ton, and 10-ton.

    Signed Lt-Col CRASC

    Appendix “J” dated 31 Mar 1945
46 TPT COLN HISTORY OF EVENTS FROM OCT 1944 TO FEB 1945

The opening day of October 1944 found CRASC 46 Transport Column located in GLABBEEK (MR Sheet 3, Scale 1;250,000 – K035565). The role which the HQ had been playing, namely control of “Railtails” in the area of ROUEN had come to an end and intimation had been received from DDST Second Army that the future planned for the Column was operation of “Q” transport details as instructed by ST Branch, HQ Second Army (Rear).

On the first day of October, 287 Coy RASC (Armd Div Tpt) was placed under command. This was a load carrying company constituted on a three platoon basis with two platoons of Mack (EH) vehicles and one platoon of Bedford (Type OY) vehicles, giving a total unit pay load of 390 tons. This pay load figure had to be accepted with reserve as the Mack, although listed as having a pay load capacity of 5-tons, was found to have with many varying loads a true capacity of 4-tons or slightly over.

The next Company to come under command was 36 Coy RASC (Army Tpt) which although a four platoon company actually had five platoons at this time, made up with three platoons of Commer Q4 type, one platoon Maudslay Militant and one platoon Mack (Type EH), giving a total Unit pay load of 600 tons, again a figure which had to be accepted with reserve as in addition to the doubt about the Mack vehicles it was also known that the Maudslay Militant listed as 6-ton pay load, in many cases had a capacity of 5 tons or slightly more.

96 Coy RASC (Tp Carrying) was placed under command on 6th October, though it was understood that control by CRASC would be administrative only and operational control by another formation was anticipated at an early date.

By 6th October, CRASC, together with companies under command, had moved to area HELCHTEREN (MR 352758) in location adjacent to HQ Second Army (Rear), CRASC actually being in the village of HELCHTEREN.

Communication with ST Army was by telephone, the effecting of which was a CRASC responsibility. The laying of this line was therefore done by CRASC personnel, not without some difficulties as the equipment scale of a CRASC does not allow for the materials and tools essential to efficient line laying. As a result, improvisation was necessary and though the line was effective it was considered that a more perfect communication could have been possible provided that better equipment was obtainable.

Further additions to the units under command were then experienced and by the 14th October, 13 Coy RASC (Tp Carrying) had been made a CRASC administrative responsibility while operational control by CRASC 44 Tpt Coln. Another load carrying company, 512 Coy RASC (Army Tpt) had come under command; this was a three platoon company with a total Unit Pay load of 270 tons: all the vehicles were Dodge (Type T/110-L5). 96 Coy RASC (Tp Carrying) were by this time operationally controlled by 8 Corps.

During the month of October the loads carried were many and varied, including Supplies, Ammunition, POL, Ord Stores, RE Stores, Salvage, EFI Stores, Mail, Refugees, Military Personnel. The work was by no means excessive and abundant facilities were obtainable for rest of personnel and maintenance of vehicles. This “break” was greatly appreciated, and every advantage taken by the column to “polish up” after Normandy-Brussels “flog”.

By the close of the month, “G” Wksp Platoon had been placed under administrative command. While the load carrying capacity of the Column had been increased by 850 tons, due to the addition of two platoons of 701 Coy RASC (Army Tpt) and the complete company of 212 Coy RASC (Army Tpt) made up as follows:- one platoon Mack (Type EH) and one platoon Maudslay Militant from 701 Coy and one platoon of Mack (Type EH) with three platoons of Commer Q4 from 212 Coy.

CRASC made a further change of location and moved to NEULENBERG (Sheet 47, Scale 1:50,000 – MR 357718).

The month of November was comparatively uneventful with a slight increase in the number of “Q” transport details carried out by the Column. Loads were of a similar nature to those carried in October, the only novelties being the evacuation of lunatics from Holland and the transportation of “Weazels”.

Our comprehensive load tables gave us no guide to the transporting of lunatics, but experience soon taught us all we had to know. It was learned, for instance, that only four lunatics in straightjackets could be carried in a three ton vehicle. Fortunately the entire detail was carried through without mishap and in all 3500 lunatics were safely transported, many of them actually being lifted from very forward positions.

The transportation of “Weazels” was a new job also, but no outstanding difficulties were experienced.

During November it is worthy of note that a considerable tonnage of supplies was transported on behalf of Civil Affairs.

A further change of location was made when CRASC moved to HECHTEL (MR Sheet 3, 1:250,000 K340825).

The month of December brought a considerable increase in work, with several outstanding details as highlights to the comparative monotony of “Q” details.

Most worthy of mention was a Troop-Carrying detail undertaken by 96 Coy when speedy action was taken to counter the German attack on the Ardennes. The Brigade Groups of 53 Division were carried from area GHEEL (MR J/0889) to area STEEREBECK (MR J/7458), the operation being entirely successful despite lengthy night travel, bad fog, ice-bound roads and traffic of unprecedented density. This detail commenced on the 20th of the month (December), and the Troop Carrying Coy was ultimately retained under operational control of the Division.

Another detail of note was carried out by 287 Coy, who supplied 18 x 5 ton vehicle to work in lieu of a platoon of three ton vehicles on second line duties with 6 Airborne Division, then located at VITRIVAL (MR J/8204). The Division were greatly appreciative of the company’s efforts and specially commended them for arrival at initial rendezvous dead on time, despite ice-bound roads and dense fog.

The most noteworthy feature of the normal column duties was the “Christmas Mail” detail and after due appreciation was given, it was decided to detach a portion of the HQ to OSTEND, the main port for receipt of Christmas Mail. It transpired to be an awkward detail; difficulty was experienced in assessing the amount of MT required from day to day, mainly owing to the irregularity of shipping. In addition, the road conditions were bad and ice and fog were constant hazards. The detachment had communication with CRASC and ST Second Army (Rear) by wireless. By the end of December the column had actually transported 1743 tons of mail without loss or damage.

One outstanding lesson which was learned during this month was the necessity of communications. With the weather conditions as they were, with constant fog and ice-bound roads, the motor-cyclist, normally quite effective as a means of communication, became almost valueless; the result being that CRASC officers detailed to supervise important “lifts” were time and time again bereft of means whereby they could keep CRASC and ST Army “in the picture”. Travelling wireless sets would appear to be the solution and it is considered that every CRASC operating “Q” details should be so equipped.

The period covered by January and February of 1945 was a continuation of the “Q” detail role. Loads were as varied as before without anything particularly novel being experienced. As a general-purpose vehicle, it was considered that the three ton pay load carrier was the most economical, though the value of the five and six ton vehicles was appreciated with certain loads.

Towards the end of this period a new type of vehicle had been introduced to the column – FWD HAR 4 x 4 vehicle with a pay load of 4 tons. Although experience of this vehicle was slight it seemed to be a “Winner” despite early “teething” troubles. The main adverse criticism to it being the all-out speed of 35 miles an hour, which made certain of the “turn-rounds” hitherto easy with the 3-ton vehicles rather tight to operate. A further innovation to the Column was the Dominion Trailer, primarily intended for use with the FWD vehicles. This trailer is capable of a pay load of 2 tons and for many “Q” transport details is ideal, though the restricted maneuverability has to be allowed for.

The month of February came to an end with a further move of the Column imminent, though the role of “Q” transport details was likely to continue.

The serial number on the side of the vehicle. The 3 tonners would begin with L followed by a 7 digit number or 6 digit if they are earlier manufactured vehicles, eg L5110432 a Bedford 3 ton QLR.

    Cheers

The 46 Tpt Coln diary for the 27 & 28 February 1945 did have some references to vehicles and their census numbers. I have attached the appropriate pages (Appendix 'J'). The discussion within the diary is about the use of DOMINION TRAILERS and their service with various vehicles.

The Diary entries for these dates are shown below.

    HECHTEL 27 Feb 1945
1000 hrs. Test of Dominion trailer 2-ton 4-wh with 3-ton BEDFORD, COMMER, DODGE. 5-ton MACK, 10-ton ALBION and MACK: report att. “Appendix J”

    HECHTEL 28 Feb 1945
0900 hrs. Test of Dominion trailer 2-ton 4-wh with 4-ton 4 x 4 HAR, at AMN RHM HOUTHAELEN with 5-ton MACK at AERSCHOT – POL: report att. Appendix J"

Having transcribed part of the 46 Transport Column War Diary, there are a few things I would like to highlight from my interest and clarification point of view.

    1. The column spent much of its time on ‘Q’ Details. Is this the transport of Supplies, POL, Ammumiun etc., or is there a more exact definition.?

    2. Appendix ‘J’- dated 27 March 1945, Notes arising from Conference attended by CRASC held by ADST(T) and Second Army (Rear) item 11. There is a reference to the word GARPLAYTIME. Is anyone recognize this term?

The sentence containing the word is as follows:

In general, full preparation has been made for the Coln HQ to be in a psn to become operational as a Corps 3rd line tpt coln. Suitable tpt boards, codes – especially GARPLAYTIME – will be brushed up and the Coln in general will be in a position to operate without accn should this be necessary. Load tables will be given especial attention and all offrs must be in possession of up-to-date load tables applicable to types of vehs we may have to operate – which will be 3-ton, 4-ton, 5-ton, 6-ton, and 10-ton.

    3. Appendix ‘J’ dated 31 March 1945 titled 46 Transport Column History of events Oct 44 to Feb 45. From my point of view, there is an interesting paragraph concerning the 96 Coy, relating to an operation on 20 December 1944. The 21st Army Group deployed troops around Brussels encase there was any breakthrough from the Ardennes

    The paragraph is as follows:

Most worthy of mention was a Troop-Carrying detail undertaken by 96 Coy when speedy action was taken to counter the German attack on the Ardennes. The Brigade Groups of 53 Division were carried from area GHEEL (MR J/0889) to area STEEREBECK (MR J/7458), the operation being entirely successful despite lengthy night travel, bad fog, ice-bound roads and traffic of unprecedented density. This detail commenced on the 20th of the month (December), and the Troop Carrying Coy was ultimately retained under operational control of the Division.

    4. The 46 Tpt Coln Diary operation orders give the required routes that a specific Coy should take to the rendevous point. As an example, Ops Order No. 8 Appendix “D” dated 8 April 45 describes the route as follows:

    S.P. RAESFELD
    BRUNEN
    then 250 UP
    VELEN
    GELCHEN
    OSTERWICK
    WARFELD
    ALTENBURGE
    X Roads
    Dispersal Point 795862
Then to Coy locns by guides from Adv Party.

Is the 250 UP a route used regularly, so further details are not required?

The 96 Coy Diary describes the company using a similar description for routes. Names such as Comet, Hat, Triangle, Club, Square, Sun, Bottle, Bun, Ayr, Spade, and Star were all used to describe specific routes.

It would be good to find a map displaying the routes.
