I am planning a visit to the National archives on Tuesday and I am having trouble finding the catalogue reference for the war diaries for a lot of the war diaires. Can anyone help? I just need the numbers and I will do the rest. It is for August 1944.

53rd Welsh Regiment, 4th,6th and 7th batallion royal Welsh fusiliers, 1st battalion Oxford and Buckinghamshire light infantry, 1st battalion highland light infantry, 1st batallion East Lancashire regiment, 2nd battalion the monmouthshire regiment, 81st and 83rd field regiment royal artillery, 133 field regiment royal artillary, 71st anti tank regiment royal artillary, 1st batallion, Manchester regiment.

I did have the 53rd welsh regiment's diary but can't find it now. I am only in the uk for a short period and am up against the wall time wise, so, any help with this would be very much appreciated. orry if some people might think I being a pain.

    WO 171/4775 71 Anti-Tank Regiment, 1945 Jan.- Oct.

P.S. this is a bit shameless of me, I know, but I would be interested in a copy of 171/4775, if you happen to take photos of it.

Unfortunately I can not order your docs, the system won't let me order all as they limit the numbers of doc ordered against the reader's card.

Hi Chris C - and anyone else esp Stolpi,
I'm doing the Brit side of Veritable and will be hoovering up the 53rd Div diaries for Feb and Mar 45. Are these any use to you and are you willing to trade some Canadian stuff? I'm short 1 Cdn Army planning info to put the Brit actions in context. Here's the list I'm ordering (green) and hoping to get later (red).

    Hi Wapen,

My interest is strictly on the anti-tank (well, Archer) side of things and I have that WD now. But what do you need from Library and Archives Canada? Maybe I can look into copying it on my next trip.

PS I expect 'Swiper' has already copied most or everything you're going to copy.

Love the Archer! Not sure I'd be keen on being crew myslef mind...

I will (eventually) suck up almost all of the Brit diaries but will need to have Cdn Army and Corps level. My current concern is the early planning notes if they survived. I was hoping to find a Canadian willing to trade. I'll try to tag 'Swiper'.

  18. Hello everyone, Forgive my bad English... I am a resident of the village of Ploegsteert in Belgium (near the French border... notably Armentières, Bailleul, Nieppe). I'm trying to trace the path of the soldiers who liberated my village 78 years ago to the day... According to my research, these would be units of the 53rd Welsh Infantry Division 71st Infantry Brigade Could you confirm that? In advance, many thanks for your help. Julien Woestyn

Hello Julien. I don't have the diaries for that time but the Div history is next to me, and they did cross the border at Armentières but gives no detail.
    Hope that helps.

  20. Thank you for this photo and your feedback. The city of Armentières being mentioned, the beer border mentioned in the book is indeed LE BIZET-PLOEGSTEERT. Most direct route to Wervick, Roeselare, etc. :)
