I lifted the information from 'The Sign Of the Double T' Barrie S Barnes who interviewed Private Walker, the man pictured at the bottom left of the picture. If Walker is an engineer then Barnes' book is wrong at attributing him to the 5th East Yorks. But same beach, same division, same story! Could you identify the thread you refer to please... Best, Steve. Here you go-I found two threads for you http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/nw-europe/19850-d-day-helmet-bands-recognition-marks.html http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/searching-someone-military-genealogy/20654-84-field-company-royal-engineers-d-day-3-new-film.html
Unfortunately that's the standard design they use for all the WW2 Battlefield Europes and it can't be changed I'm told. Ah fair point. That does make sense if it's standard for the whole series. You forgot the token airborne picture Drew didnt notice the airborne chap second from the right.
It looks like the story about Private Walker is right, after all it came from his own recollections, but I think the picture attributed to him in 'The Sign Of The Double T' is wrong; the evidence clearly shows it to be so. We now have a correct attribution to an RE Beach Company on Sword Beach; see Andy's links in the post immediately above. Best, Steve.
Best of luck with the book Paul. Does the book cover Gold beach exclusively or will there be some Canuckian content to be found?
Look forward to reading it when it's out Paul, will give me some ideas on where to go when venturing out around the place. W
The book is due out in May and is now available to pre-order on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Walking-D-Day-Paul-Reed/dp/1848848366/
The book is now out! Currently on the P&S website: Pen and Sword Books: Walking D-Day When I get some copies there will be a competition to win one on the forum.
Paul not being noted for winning anything - I shall order a copy just to make sure I actually get one - it is the Normandy D Day I take it ...? Cheers
