Is it true the rumour? Can they multi-task?:p No comment / right to remain silent.... D, have you got this one, 'from Geoff's Search Engine' Name: RANKIN, HERBERT Initials: H Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Pilot Officer (Air Gnr.) Regiment: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve Unit Text: 61 Sqdn. Age: 22 Date of Death: 25/02/1944 Service No: 173840 Awards: DFM Additional Information: Son of Hugh and Agnes Rankin, of Dublin, Irish Republic. Casuality Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: 1. G. 1. Cemetery: CHOLOY WAR CEMETERY Thanks Geoff, he wasn't on my list on the thread - but checked for any omission on my part. He def. does not appear in any of the publications, so one to add to the list. Many thanks, that search engine is a wonderful thing!
Thanks Geoff, he wasn't on my list on the thread - but checked for any omission on my part. He def. does not appear in any of the publications, so one to add to the list. There may be more.... I used to have a Awards field on one of my engines but as it was never used even once, I took it down to save weight. It's too much work for me to re-install it with all the uncertainty, but I can search from here. I got about 20 hits for Dublin, I'll check the others against this post and PM you any I find to avoid messing up the format and also check a few other locations. With all due respect to the gallant officer. I would check for a citation - it's not unknown for the award field to have scanning errors, but probably quite rare and he was simply missed off the lists you have. (found a DSO like that once, after I told the rellies they never spoke to me again. Was it the Romans who used to exectute messengers who brought bad news? I got off lightly.)
Thanks, this is really excellent. Quite a few years ago - in the pre-Internet days - I did a bit of research on the subject for a college project. I don't see anything that I could add. However, with the joys of the massive volume of online material now available, I'd love to add to the list if I got some time. From the briefest of glances I noticed that there are one or two cases where a DFM is mentioned instead of a DFC, e.g. here's one re JA Hemingway: World War 2 Awards.com - HEMINGWAY, John Allman However, I'm not going to trawl through such an excellent resource with minor corrections, as I'd prefer to take on perhaps some of the gaps in the later years of the war. Congratulations on such a fine body of research.
I have tried to cross reference those with names on The Free states "confidential list", have a few hits with the same name but I suppose the only way to be sure is to pull there file for last known address & pre war profession. I am not warrying about officers per se, but for enlisted men it is highly likely I will get a few hits confirmed Regards Simon
Just came across this thread, great information... I am from what was "neutral" Eire during the war, both my grandfathers along with most of their brothers served in WW2 in all theatres, Army, Navy & Airforce... they never spoke about it and never got any formal recognition, all survived but two died of their injuries years later... still a contentious issue even after 70 years... And they shouldn't be forgotten - would you post their names on here? Thanks Diane you do wonderful work on the forum and I bet your house is spotless. Clearly the inventor of multitasking!
Cheers all. Please feel free to add a name or make a correction. It'll help someone down the line. I'll add images here from the DO file when I have time - it'd be quicker than transcribing. I still refuse to comment on the quality of my housekeeping though.
