For a while now I've been trying to find the memorial to a particular German squaddie who features in a wehrpass and some other documents owned by a friend, having virtually no German and Internet translators being what they are I seem to get nowhere with the Volksbund site, It inevitably ends up asking for German address details which I'm unable to supply. Am I in the right place or is there as easily searchable a database as the CWGC? I've been assuming I'm coming up against a certain amount of ring-fencing of German war-dead, perhaps understandably. Cheers, Adam
I'm assuming that you've tried this bit: Translated version of http://www.volksbund.de/ then Grabersuche then zur onlinesuche It only asks name, and dates (if available)
Yeah but filling in the form (Got date and cause of death) takes me straight to a request for my details, tried all sorts of combinations of adresses here and in Germany and can't seem to satisfy the requirements. Trouble is much of the wehpass is in that archaic german that my mate said only her mother could read, wanted to find the grave reference to see if that was clearer on his unit etc.
Yes, sorry, just tried it with a name, and get the same. Just cleaned the bath and I think the bleach fumes have got to me!!
PM the name - I've just registered. Or, do as I did Vorname - surname Nacname - I used my first name Road/Nr.*: - my first line of address Country/postal code/Ort*: - (first box) UK, (second box) first part of postcode, (third boc) last part of postcode Then ticked "historical interest" box Then finished Afterwards a thank you message appears, pressed enter, and I could do the search. Came up with the names (just used cut and paste into babel for translation. The only thing is to press the browser back button, or you have to register all over again.
wouldn't accept my details, I'll try again. Need to dig out the name etc again... bundle of papers somewhere.
