Might be a good idea to post some links connected with visiting WW2 battlefields to help those who are thinking of going or planning a visit. To start with, from my own website: Ardennes - Battle of the Bulge http://battlefieldsww2.50megs.com/ardennes_battlefields.htm Arnhem http://battlefieldsww2.50megs.com/arnhem_battlefields.htm Normandy Battlefields http://battlefieldsww2.50megs.com/normandy_battlefields.htm Battlefields in Italy 1943-45 http://battlefieldsww2.50megs.com/italy.htm
Hi Maybe we should bump this up again..... I also do tours...lol Seriously though I thought more people would have made a comment on this one.... A worthwhile cause. Cheers Marc
Hi If anyone needs help on planning a visit to the Cassino cemetery have a look at my article: BBC - WW2 People's War - Return to Cassino Seasonal regards Ron
Thanks for bumping it up Marc. Ron - nice article. I see you are a veteran of the Italian campaign; my Dad (whose photo is my avatar) was there in 1944-45 with 24th Field Regiment RA.
Hi Paul & Owen Thanks for the replies. Come Feb next year when the BBC WW2 site becomes a sealed Archive I shall, hopefully, be spending a bit more time on this site. In the meantime if you have any stories to post on the BBC site, do it now.... after Jan 31st it will be too late Ciao for now Ron

Have a great Christmas & A Safe and Happy New Year This name seemed familiar to me however my apologies if it has been posted before. I did notice Gerry Chester's (forum member) name on his friends page. Quite an interesting and well set out personal story. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/ww2/U520216
To tell you the truth guys, I used to live in Germany for four years and I loved it. Especialy seing the battlefields
Here's my website with our tours on. There's only two at the moment, Normandy and Arnhem, with Ypres coming this year. I also went to Berlin for a weekend and should have some pictures up from there soon and hope to get the memorials and statues of my home town (Manchester) up soon. http://www.bujold.co.uk
Interesting, anyone know of any tours to North Africa? Dave. Yup,look here. Remembrance Travel - Pilgrimages
I think Holts also do them, but you would extend your student debt if you went with either of these companies! Why not do it yourself; you can fly into the El Alamein area. Rent a 4x4 and off you go. That is certainly what I plan to do when I finally get out there.

Hi Dave, Pell Tours did a week at El Alamein last year at a reasonable price. The only problem was transport.Avis in Alexandria were asking £100 a day. What I did manage to do was to hire the Hotel Shuttle bus and driver for 5 days. This will not get you too far off the roads though. Perhaps a good search on Google would find you a better deal. The Commandant at the Military Museum that a film Company had done a Recce of Alam Halfa a short while ago,but hadn't found any equiptment left on the Battlefield. In 2000 I did manage to get over 24km on the Alamein track in a Saloon car but it would have been unwise to travel further.

What about perhaps spending several weeks there on holiday and staying in a hotel while exploring? Just a thought. Dave.

The cheapest way I ever did the trip was to fly into Cairo, stop overnight and then drove through Alexandria,Alamein,Mersa Matruh,Sidi Barani and on to Sollum. For some reason the flight to Cairo is much cheaper than to Borg el Arab. Last year a landing strip was available to the West of Alamein, but there was no provision for night time landings. Perhaps this was because operation"Brightstar"was in progress.
I've been doing a bit more thinking, does anyone know much about staying in hostels around El Alamein/Alexandria? D.
