Just come back from an interesting battlefield recce exploring the Liege forts from the 1940 campaign and the Maginot Line between Villy la Ferte and Hackenberg. Put a post on my blog:

Have uploaded my iPhone photos to Flickr:

Maginot Line - iPhone - a set on Flickr

Have another 500 DSLR images to upload in due course.

Our member MLW's website and Osprey book was very useful, I must say.

Ouvrage Fermont. This block was almost penetrated with an 88mm but the Germans attacking it never realised.

I have always fancied visiting the Maginot Line, but I didn't know things like barbed wire and anti-tank posts still existed in places. Thanks for posting those photos Paul.

Paul, did you go inside Petit Ouvrage La Ferte? The entire crew of 107 died in the battle, most in the underground corridor between Blocks 1 and 2. For that reason, to me, the fort is a tomb.

Owen - yes will add this next weekend.

MLW - yes went inside. First went there in 1999; always found it very eeery in those tunnels!

Marc Halter, the president of Fort Schonenbourg, wrote this book on the Maginot Line. I took a photo of this poster advertising the book while at Hackenberg recently. Anyone seen this one yet? They had it for sale at Hackenberg, and I suppose also at Schonenbourg.

Fantastic thread. I'm so glad it got a bump or I wouldn't have noticed it.

    Thanks all!
