Hey, Owen! Finally found some sort of solution about rent a car. Car can be rent in Moscow and driven from there (yes there r Ford Galaxy - 2750+ roubles for 7 days and Nissan X-Trail - 3765+ roubles for 7 days for ex.), for prices look here: Àðåíäà àâòîìîáèëåé (495) 937-8703. Àðåíäà àâòîìîáèëåé â Ìîñêâå, Ñàíêò-Ïåòåðáóðãå, Íèæíåì Íîâãîðîäå. Ïðàéñ-ëèñò and Ñòîèìîñòü ïðîêàòà àâòîìîáèëåé â Ìîñêâå â êîìïàíèè «Sky Rent», can be readable thru google with some limitations. Road from Moscow to us is about 6 hours, of course with guide who will meet u in Moscow :) - probably me and my approved driver :) (of course better Galaxy :))).
EDIT: another rental services: Êîìïàíèÿ FreeWay. Ïðîêàò è àðåíäà àâòîìîáèëåé áåç âîäèòåëÿ (available in english, there r only KIA Carniaval), Òàðèôû íà àðåíäó àâòîìîáèëåé - Ïðîêàò àâòîìîáèëåé îò DCR Ìîñêâà | Àðåíäà ëåãêîâûõ àâòî ìàøèí Mercedes, BMW, Ford, Mazda (there r available baby seats, but biggest car is BMW X5 :(), can be read thru google.

I always like their criteria for 'non-professional' camera.
None of mine would satisfy the 10mm lens thing, even compacts.
Might explain why one rarely sees good photos from there. ;)

Read it twice and can say that at least half of rules r full of sh*t (excuse me plz) but as I know they cannot do anything to prohibit u visit for example Central Museum of Great Patriotic War in Moscow...
EDIT: anyway I think it is still possible to get there. Because I talked with russian visiters and they said that to get there u should not show any indentification documents :) such passport or something, just buy ticket and enter :) (as said 1 of them - if u will not say that u r foreigner then noone will ask u about that :))

    This sounds dodgey.

    WARNING
    * Any attempts of the citizens of NO Russian Federation (including former-USSR) to visit museum with the Russian visitors could be qualified as the UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS. The violator could be accused in the ESPIONAGE.

The Russian military officials DO NOT LIKE the model makers (the regular violators of the museum rules)

Is that right that Portugese model makers are even more unwelcome? :D
(Alex , that's a joke about one of our members, if you're confused.;) )

That model-maker quote has always made me laugh, I presume they're referring to manufacturers that have taken shots and then produced kits without talking to the museum.

They mean that if u ask me buy u a ticket and we togther will pass inside and after u will talk on english with me :)) they will consider it like an un-authorized access. So in this case we both have to be as calm as possible and use Morse or deaf-and-dumb alphabet to say "WOW! its great Tiger!" and "please shot me in front of this Maus" :))
I understood joke :) as I've seen that someone was Portugese here :)

Alex, can you make them a little smaller?
    They'd fit the screen then,
    Thanks.

Here are some more pictures from the Kiev Museum, the first is a mural inside, showing the storming of the Dniepr river (the river running through Kiev), you can just see in the forground some of the flimsy boats they used to get across.

    Next is a SU-152 (of course!) :D

Third is the big victory statue outside the museum, it's visible from across the river and from most of central Kiev

That doesn't even sound right, don't they mean perhaps 10 cm? 10 mm is really tiny...

Was it always this crazy in Russian museums or only lately with Putin?

There is nothing like that in Ukraine, neither at the Kiev museum or at Balaklava (Sevastopol). I don't know what's up in Russia, thats just way too paranoid!

At the both Ukraine museums you just have to buy a ticket to use your camera, it cost me 20 Grv to get in (1.90 pound) and 10 Grv extra for the camera (a whopping 95p!)

Here is a picture of me with the Mig-23, and the second id with the Hind. There is a little old WWII vet on duty, for 2 Grv (20p!) you can actually sit in the Hind and get a picture! (Sorry my GF didn't take a really good one, its hard to see me in the cockpit...)

Hey!! Yo!! Sorry, just kidding :) As I told before this crazy thing is ONLY (afaik!) at Kubinka because of museum place is inside of military unit position :) and model maker firms r often trying to film or photo vehicles without permission of museum. Of course I think there must be 10cm lens limitation :)

Yes, plenty of space to hang out your washing, you could probably even fit a full-size bathtub in there. ;)

If anyone gets the urge to visit an A39 Tortoise there's still one at Bovington... The finest tank collection in the world. :p

    Cheers,
    Adam.

I went there when I was a very Young 'un, I hope to make it back next year...

10 mil it is, think of your compact camera lens, very small.
Hey Freebird, just in case, bear in mind that Bovington's undergoing a major 'overhaul' until February next year & is closed during the week until that's done. ;)

:p Anyway, Kubinka is largest tank museum :p But think that Bovington is cool too :)

    [1st Trip] Beginning and Katyusha

Folks, at this time I'm ready to post a draft or beta version of photo report, it is still uncomplete. Tomorrow I'll add a scanned maps from mentioned book and modern map I've used instead of GPS :D to drive there, and also continue reporting.

EDIT: Damn, deleted because of some troubles :(

Map of battlefield area from book of Will Fowler:
Sorry, at this time no translation, a bit later it will appear.

    Modern map of battlefield area:
I did on this map some funky legend :) K - place where stands 'Katyusha', W - windmill, T - a place of tanks exposure, B - tank battlefield itself with Belltower and soviet vanguard frontline.
Also did a lame markings of of assault directions of both sides :) Just a few minutes in Photoshop :)
EDIT: misplaced lower green arrow it must have beginning at railroad, not to cross it :(

Here is photo of place on map where road turns to marks 'K' & 'B':

This is a roadsign that is showing way to Prokhorovka.

At this point in year 1975 placed ‘Katyusha’ (BM-13) that was restored by veterans of tank battle on their own money.
    Here is its fotos:

Unfortunately, u can see that 'Katyusha' partially broken by vandals. Have to say, that vandals is a curse of russian country :(.
