Just read the pinned thread on Broadway and the two accounts of your friends journey...it really sounds an amazing and moving trip for the veteran and his family. She thinks that we may not be able to get there at the moment but you never know...I suspect it depends on the guide we get and personal contact. Thank you for pointing out the thread though, must have missed it before for some reason.
Is anyone interested in our travel blog..?.have started it already even though we aren't going till November! just getting too excited...
Hi Everyone My dad was in the 1st Cameronians. I'm looking to travel to NE India and Burma next year to visit the relevant areas to the 1944 campaign. I'd be grateful for any tips and assistance anyone is able to give - and any local contacts, guides, tour companies, etc. I note next year is the 75th anniversary. Does anyone know if there are any commemorations planned?
We have an extensive programme planned to commemorate the Imphal battles throughout March to June for the 75th anniversary. As I see your interest lies with the Cameronians it will be at Kohima you will need to go. They are now several tour companies specialising in this. There will no doubt be commemorations at Kohima.
There will be a celebration for the 75th Anniversary of Operation Thursday held next year. The Chindit Society and the current day 77th Brigade are still in the planning stages for the event and so I cannot add much more. There was talk of a party going over to Burma visit the area around White City/Pagoda Hill where a new memorial has been unveiled. However, with the current political situation being what it is, this might prove difficult for a team that includes MOD personnel. Below is a photograph of the Chindit Memorial placed at Op Hill White City. Unveiled 16th April 2016.
Thanks everyone for your replies. When in NE India, I intend to visit both Imphal and Kohima. I'm hoping to visit in April next year. Is there anything planned around that time?
Hi Dad's War See the post from Lionboxer above #27. There is a Facebook group called Imphal 75th for those interested in going and another called WW2 Burma Research that may be of interest. Send me a message with a phone number if you would like to chat about your visit or have questions - I went in 2014 and plan to go again next year.
