I know this does not fit as it is from the the early1960's but Field Marshall Montgomery gave a series of lectures describing his battles.

He was his usual bumptious self but the stuff was absolutley fascinating.

I have tried looking up BBC archives but can't find any reference.

Surely the BBC would not have dumped this irreplaceable material but can anyone help me find it?
I've just done a quick hunt through The Times and found some possible candidates.

When his memoirs were published in 1958, there was what was called a "spontaneous conversation" between Monty, Brigadier ET Williams and Charles Collingwood of CBS. Broadcast November 20th 1958 on the Home Service and a full one and a half hours long!

On January 2nd 1960, BBC TV broadcast a 35-minute programme called "Field-Marshal Montgomery on Normandy".

In 1961 Monty recorded a radio programme called "Leadership", in conversation with Ed Murrow: I'd guess this was probably originally American. Broadcast twice on the Home Service.

In July and August 1964 some ITV regions showed a series of programmes called "Mind Behind War", one of which featured Montgomery.

However, the BBC did make one TV programme which might fit the bill: it was called "Monty - Portrait of a Soldier" and was described as 'film and sound recordings of Field-Marshal Montgomery'. Broadcast September 1st 1964 on BBC1. As far as I can tell, it was never repeated.

Thanks for that. Sorry have tried so hard to find this thread again and only just worked out how to do it!

I can certainly remember him talking about Normandy - still remember him with his cane smacking the map on the easel and coming out with such phrases as "crumblingly Jerry" but I also thought I remembered El Alamein as well (memory plays tricks).

Do you have any advice on how I should approach the BBC on this subject - don't mind paying a modest sum to get a copy.
