    Hello chaps,

Recently I saw a small memorial plaque in Le Paradis War Cemetery which read VERA BROUGH 9.8.1924 - 18.4.2004 THE SOLDIERS FRIEND "GOODNIGHT DARLING". Does anyone know something about this lady?

    TIA!

    Regards,

    Marco

Does anyone know who this women is?

I found this in the cemetery at Paradis last year and it appears her ashes were scattered with those that were massacred.

Well, as she was born in 1924, she was just 15 or 16 when the massacre happened in May 1940, so a very innocent friend.....
It's a pity it's so faded that I can't make out much of the message. Her initials seem to be VGB, but that may have been her married name, as there is no Brough in Le Paradis.
I don't suppose anyone can recognise the badge on the first cross? is it a Scottish Lion?
Presumably there needs to be some CWGC permission involved to have someones ashes buried there, particularly with a marker. I'd assume it must be her father, but could it have been a young soldier?
There's no Sparrow to tie in with "Goodnight Sweetheart" or Lynn to tie in with Vera...
I can't see a logical connection - she seems too young to have had a romantic attachment, but that's what soldiers friend seems to imply, not something you'd expect in a father daughter relationship, but even the youngest were 20 which is a good bit older.... brother? again, Goodbye Sweetheart doesn't seem to have a connection
The TV series was set in Bethnal Green, so is there an East End connection....

I'm through guessing, I'll leave it to someone from CWGC to reveal all!!

Hi Kevin, Not the first time I have seen ashes scattered in a CWGC Cemetery. I kind of came to the same conclusions as you. I suspected she may have been a sister to one of those murdered.

I may email the Norfolks museum and see if they know.

    Cheers
    Andy

    Email sent :)

I've PM'd him and emailed the Norfolks Museum. Here's hoping.....

I've got 3 Norfolk books regarding the massacre, I'll check the index's before I go to bed....

....Loverly, all 3 have no index

Any chance of disabling the link in post #5?
It just takes you back into this thread again, now that Marco's 2008 enquiry is at the head!

Just a thought, but could Vera have been just a fund raiser. Such as this Chap here.
    The Soldiers Friend Marker

But someone must know who she was.

    Hello DBF,

No, never found out who she was. It is that ' soldiers friend' thing that makes me wonder.

    Regards,

    Marco

I received the following email today from the Norfolks Museum:

    Thank you for your email.

For enquiries where research is requested we ask that you send the information by post, as our volunteers do not have access to email facilities. Much of the work is undertaken by volunteers and we ask for your patience as large numbers of enquiries are received. We also ask to you to provide a self stamped addressed envelope to enable us to reply. This enables us to respond with photocopied material.

    Kind regards,

    Abby Biggs

I get the feeling she didn't read my email

Thanks for responding Marco. A pity that you didn't find out either.

Perhaps she was a pen pal or some such... something like we have today when people send stuff to the troops? I wondered why that particular cemetery too, agree there surely must be a personal connection of some kind.

Andy sounds like an automatically generated email, doesn't it?
