On our trip last month ,as the CWGC, German and American Cemeteries we also visited this French one. The Cemetery is divided into two parts , Christian and Muslim. It doesn't seem that well looked after. On some of the crosses the name plates had fallen off, they are only glued on. Most of the Muslim headstones needed a repaint . Some more views of the Muslim graves. Men from Tunisia, Algeria and Morrocco.
Thank you Owen and Paul Reed for the photos! It is not often one sees the French military cemeteries at all, I wish more could be seen, and there locations too. As for the headstones, they appear to be a marbled type of stone, so a cleaning rather than a painting-over should do the trick. A quick search revealed an interesting pdf file on the Franco-Italian agreements concerning the national jurisdiction of French and Italian military cemeteries in each country. A nice list of locations and from what wars the graves date follows the text. It is worth a look: http://untreaty.un.org/unts/60001_120000/4/4/00006159.pdf Thanks again Gents, hope to see more French cemetery images in the future.

Just for you... http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/war-cemeteries-war-memorial-research/14356-french-cemeteries.html dave. Good man Dave. Well "dug up" if you'll pardon the awful pun!!!
Photos courtesy of Rotherfield This is the French cemetery at Venafro which is about 8 miles East of Cassino, it holds Muslim troops as well as Christian.
The name Venafro rang a bell with me so I went back to my Diaries and found the following: April 7 : Larry and I attended a Jewish Passover service organised by the South African Forces at the Junction of the Vanairo/Venafro roads. The full story is here: BBC - WW2 People's War - Monte Cassino, March to May 1944 ron
Photo of French memorial courtesy of Rotherfield This is the French monument on the road from Venafro to Cardito, does anybody have any idea what went on there so many French soldiers lost their lives in this area (109) Regards Mike
As stolpi mentioned this thread in his recent post I suppose I'd better replace the missing photos of mine in this one. stolpi 's thread. A winter in the Abruzzo Mountains - French Expeditionary Corps - Italy (21 Nov 1943 - 3 Feb 1944)
