My Uncle Tommy was with the REME in Egypt and Italy and the attached photo shows him sat (far right) on the front of a car. Can anyone please identify the make and model of the car? The number looks like M4339651. I don't know anything about his war so any information would be appreciated.

M4339651 was allocated "CinC M.E. L.P." (Commander in Chief, Middle East, Local Purchase) which doesn't help much...Quite a number of U.S. built vehicles were purchased locally, for instance in Alexandria from the pre-war agents. This one looks like a 1940 Chevrolet Master to me.

I was going to say Chevrolet myself but with no idea as to model. If I could share this with someone I think I could get an exact ID. Would that be OK?

Ok great, I have posted on the missing-lynx modelling forum to see about vehicle ID.

I agree with your reading of the serial number.

Having gotten some replies and looked at some cars I think that Rich Payne hit the nail on the head. The 1939 model has a different looking nose - I think the grille might go up higher; in any case it doesn't seem to have those two horizontal bars (I think part of a decoration for Chevy) followed by a gap below them - you can see that to the left of the third man's shoulder.

Thanks Chris, so am I right in saying that it's a 1940 Chevy Master and the photo, based on where the car was purchased is in Egypt? If so that is great as it confirms what we already thought, sadly all his war records were thrown away by my Auntie after he died so all we have left is a handful of photos.

    Thanks again for your help.

    That's likely I think...

Have you started the process of requesting a copy of his MOD records?

I am about to start that process. I will post his other photos on a separate link in the appropriate forum section as well.
